It's bizarre and deliberate; they don't have to produce their shows like that, so the question is, why do they?

I was watching on CBS, and it's so much better. No hyperbole, they explain things when needed, and there's no screeching and blatant agenda.

The regular starters not so bad:
Schezny Sagna Clichy Koscielny
Song Fabregas Wilshere Nasri Rosicky
Walcott Van Persie Arshavin

Ramsey and Vermaelen were both perma-injured that season, and the ‘depth’ was the likes of Djourou Squillaci Bendtner Chamakh Denilson Diaby Eboue Vela … none of which ever turned into quality players for us.

His criticism does seem excessive at times, and not just Gyökeres, but in general.

He reminds me of Glenn Hoddle, who was reportedly overly critical of players in the England team during his tenure as coach. If you don't do it the way they did, you're doing it wrong.

May explain why those types of players don't work well as coaches.

Also re-watched the Gyökeres chance that Henry criticised and I do feel the criticism was excessive. Henry (as he used to do as a coach) imagines everyone is as fast as him.

Watched all of Gyökeres's touches in an edited clip and he's a bull, works so hard and though both headers were off target, he's getting into this positions. He's gonna get plenty of goals, no doubt.

Basques on the whole — especially in Spain — are *anti-fascist* on account of the horrors they suffered during the Spanish Civil War and then under the fascist Franco regime. I recommend reading about Guernica to understand just a little bit. And if you want a deeper understanding, I can’t recommend Mark Kurlansky’s “A Basque History of the World” highly enough — among other insights, it definitely sheds light on why a club like Athletic has a policy of only signing players with connections to the Basque Country and why many Basques have solidarity with other nation-less people, like Gazans.

Yesterday's result ultimately came slightly out of the left field. The potentially forgotten characters Gabi and Leo became each others' wingmen.
Whereas Saturday was all about the new additions- Zubi, Vic, Ez, Christh, and Noni. The story of last night without appearing gauche seemed to contain an element of redemption. Characters refusing to be left behind.
The Spanish word for right is la derecha- straight Latinate. The word for left is ironically more romantic while on the other hand appropriately more left field- izquierda. It's from Euskera- the Basque language- a pre-Indo European, orphan tongue with no known sibling languages. It was great to see the Arsenal brotherhood as the wingers came out of the shadows and caught the spotlight at the end of the game.
In truth Noni was also excellent again. And Christhian - that combo of a given name and a lisp- never seems to slip. That he performances has possibly flown ever so slightly under some people's radar is perhaps testament to his seemingly seamless filling of Saliba's huge boots.
But the abiding memory of the night will be the joy on the faces of Leo and Gabi while receiving the embraces of their teammates- Cala-pointing to Martinelli's name on the back of the Brazilian's jersey.

Don't bring politics into it. You have your view, others differ. You want to understand the Basques you have to know the history of fascism in Spain and why Basques consider themselves independent, with their own culture and language. I don't particularly like sectarianism of any kind, but I don't know the full history and by all accounts it's a welcoming city and region. That speaks volumes and very different from the kind of "nationalism" we've seen on UK streets in the past few days.

I said it the other day, we now have sufficient depth to carry an average season’s set of injuries. Obviously it’s not ideal to have five regular starters missing for any length of time but this squad has strength.

It’s going to be uncomfortable for MLS, Ethan and Dowman not getting the regular game time they want, but they’ll certainly start against Port Vale, and they’ll get their opportunities.
MLS v Haaland pt3 coming up - but it might need to be as a sub rather than a starter. Big Gab will be there to sow the first seeds, that’s for sure.

To say Eze had a tough game is not "giving him stick". He's a brilliant player and I have no doubt he's gonna shine. But he did have difficulty getting away from his marker, they were doubling up on him as well and very well-organised.

Gyökeres as well struggled to get the ball from out of his feet. Thierry Henry criticised his ball movement for the run on goal which led to the weak shot. People will get mad that he's criticising, but we've got to understand that that's what happens in football. Many people had judged Madueke before he'd kicked a ball (including me) but it was more about timing. Now he's playing well, everyone's praising him.

Fans are fickle, maybe. But we go game by game. I admire those who show faith in their players through the bad days, but that's a rarity and not always helpful. Martinelli scored an important goal. He deserves it for his hard work. But if he plays again and has a bad game the critics will be out again. The fact his team-mates and his manager have his back means more than an army of critics.
madarse @ 09:01 | Sep 17, 2025

Very happy for Martinelli (and Tross - but the latter is one you don't feel as anxious for, he delivers end product regularly). Let's hope this gives him a burst of confidence that allows him to perform in an attacking sense to the level that rewards his effort, defensive shift and loyalty to the club and manager.

Great win last night, it was difficult at the start, but the players played through that and came good. I'm really happy for Martinelli after some of the flak he's taken recently. The question i want to ask Arteta though is why he steadfastly refuses to play the boy through the middle on occasion, he looks tailor made for the position.

Outstanding performance, can't be praised highly enough to go to a stadium with an atmosphere like that, against a well-organised and aggressive team and keep it tight and snatch a win at the end. Superb!

Martinelli, I've been one of his biggest critics, but I had a feeling when he came on that he'd do something. The way his team-mates rallied around him and even the way he accepted his MotM trophy, you know they're all aware of people like me. I'm just happy for him and for Trossard as well, it keeps Eze on his toes who struggled a bit last night.

Mosquera was immense again last night (note to ed: he's 21 not 20, born in June 2004 according to wiki), composed, strong, fast. A good argument for him starting on Sunday. Timber goes under the radar because he's consistently so good in all departments, as was Gabriel.

Just a perfect night and I would love to visit Bilbao, it sounds like an amazing city. One day hopefully...
