Ancellotti will have seen Martinelli be one of if the men of the match against Real Madrid in bernabu, and score the break away in last minute
Yeah, I get it, you like Martinelli and will continue to defend him. That's fine. I think Ancelotti played him for the reasons Arteta does; he works as hard if not harder than any player on the team, he has pace and strength and he follows instructions. He can play quite well when the pressure's off and he can score goals. I think many of us would like him to relax more in those key moments, learn to look up, learn to trust and be decisive in whether to pas or shoot. Brazilians are known for playing rhythmically, keeping the rhythm of the passing going. I think Martinelli is more heavy metal than samba, but it's good that he has many more supporters in the fanbase than critics, and it's good that Arteta and Ancelotti show faith as well. I'm sure he will still have an important part to play, regardless if fans like me doubt him.

Don't exaggerate, you sound like you have an agenda when you do that. He did brilliantly to get to where he did. As I recall, he was slightly off balance, had a defender on him and may have slightly lost his footing. He could have shot a fraction of a second earlier, but there was already an overall tension in the team, a lot of the approach play felt rushed. That's not to excuse it fully, I was frustrated he didn't pull the trigger too, but he did so much more from an attacking point of view in his short time than Martinelli did in the whole time he was on. He will get into those positions time and again and more often than not he will score or assist. He is clearly and undeniably a better player than Martinelli. It's not even up for debate, why are you even trying?

I've just watched the reel of all his touches in the Brazil v Chile games. Contrary to those who say he hasn't been well coached, I think the opposite. He always make the right decision to make sure his positioning and that he keeps the ball for his side. Lots of good lay offs, a couple of good take ons, a couple of shots that aren't really much but are on target. He does all the minimum a coach would expect and he puts the work in where many more talented players wouldn't. He'll be a useful squad player, but I'm pretty sure Eze is a nailed-on starter from here on in.

I don't think anyone really considers Martinelli a technical player. He has speed, directness and that's about it. He's like Theo but with lower shooting ability and inferior at keeping his head up and seeing who is available for the pass.

I suspect starting him against the pewl was about 2 things. 1) His defensive workrate and positional discipline (both great characteristics, but need to be married to offensive threat which he has lost - temporarily or more long term?). 2) Showing him / us that despite louder rumours, transfer snippets and new signings, he is still part of the plan.

If he starts the next game I will possibly shit the bed / sofa.

That's a fair point, though there are enough talented players in that team that maybe he just wanted a hard runner and he did sub him, so maybe he wasn't that good there either (didn't see it). No one can argue that he doesn't work extremely hard. I think the point that Clive made on Arsenal Vision (always so diplomatically and insightfully) is that Martinelli is now over-thinking. When he was younger he was just taking players on, trusting in his pace and getting shots off. The run with Gyökeres is a case in point in what he is doing now. He should have been releasing it as soon as Vik started making the run. He didn't (maybe because he didn't have the technical ability to play the slide-rule pass into his path that was needed) and Gyökeres had to check and try to work out what Martinelli was going to do (an impossible task in his present funk) and then had to check back as Martinelli just kept on running and finally took the ball out to touch. It's a problem and personally I think we need much more out on that wing. With Calafiori hopefully staying fit and Hincapié looking like he'll be a great player on the flanks, there's be no excuse that was given before that Martinelli has been starved of service on the left, but equally, those players will allow Eze to play a more central role from the left with either (or both) of those two overlapping and allowing Eze to do damage cutting inside, in a way that Martinelli could do if he was anywhere near the technical player some still believe he is able to be. Time will tell, we have him until at least January.

Great that she played a Chromatics song, not so great that she closed with jazz. What a bum note to end on.

That's quite an incredible list of cameos! Amazing.

Mogwai played four songs from their most recent album and a nice selection of their back catalog. Closed the show with the 20 minute epic My Father My King.

Saw mogwai in 1996, before , ten rapid album tour in Bristol Louisiana pub 150 capacity, their amps where nearly reaching the ceiling. Like being a wind tunnel of awesome noise .
Did they play new tracks ?

It was his brother Quinten though, if I believe L'Equipe's match data.
My bad, you are absolutely right.

The stupid thing is I watched the game and really thought it was Jurrien. 🤦‍♂️ Those guys don't only look similar, they move very similar too.

It was very good. Her own (so far limited) output is a bit on and off but she has a couple of excellent tunes, and I was wondering if she'd played Chromatics stuff and we got treated to Cherry and Shadow, which was fantastic (before a totally pointless jazzy number as an 'encore' to finish the set, but that was mercifully short and you knew it was the end - I can't stand jazz, mostly).

300 for Mogway? Wow. Haha, yes I can imagine the room was well filled with the sound!

That Zubimendi pass is a kind of signature of his. It's simple and sharp and it splits a crowded defence. It should be the kind of pass that Gyökeres and the two wingers will feed on.

All the passes in that Spain goal looked pretty snazzy, especially the cross-field diagonal pass.
As Larry G used to say on here...

I'm afraid Martinelli is a busted flush. Need an upgrade on him next summer, regardless of how well Eze or even Madueke do on the LW

It's been a busy week of fantastic concerts. Mogwai on Wednesday, Kneecap last night, and The Raveonettes tonight. Then Saturday I can sleep.

I'm wondering when the "out-of-form Martinelli officially becomes the "never-really-stepped-up Martinelli". Probably after he's sold. All the official commentators have been very gentle with him over the past couple of years when it's been clear to many he just doesn't have the skills to take us to the next level. We've stepped up a level. I hope his specialist skills (running and working hard and the occasional eye for goal when he plays by instinct) will come to the fore. But I do think we need Trossard's more refined skills and finishing as back-up, so I hope the interest from Turkey is shooed away.
