Spurs thought they had Eze wrapped up, the possibility of a cash-plus-Richarlison deal discussed, but Arsenal moved with lightning speed once they were confronted by the possibility of Havertz facing a spell on the sidelines.

I do think Josh Kroenke has learned lessons from a) not having a sporting director and b) not buying a striker in January. Not worth penny pinching that last £50m+ to come second in league and reach semis of CL. Backing Arteta & Berta to know what is needed and getting it done. Big respect.

It would be good to get this finalised before Leeds. But the chances of a starting line-up of Eze, Gyökeres, Ødegaard and Saka for Liverpool is a mouthwatering prospect. I hope that's what Arteta has in mind for our new No 10.

The three way arrangement was too complicated with the two other players not wanting to either move to Spuds or to go to Palace.
Seems like Levy was trying to be too clever not thinking anyone else was in for Eze

Yeah tough for Kiwior to stay really. People will talk about us being short but he's probably the 5th choice CB right now, have to think about actual sellable assets and his own career.

Take 3 CB injuries for him to play regularly and neither him or the club can really just shrug and say 'Might happen' even if we all rightly fear it

Opposite effect I think - when buying clubs think you need their money to get another deal done, they dig their heels in. If you show you can get incoming done regardless of sales, it can give you leverage. And buyers get desperate as the window closes - we should know.

Re the concerns he doesn't play on the left, The Athletic has a helpful visual. Since 2020-21 he's played:

30% of his games at left attacking midfield
19% at left midfield
9% at left wing
12% at central attacking midfield
25% at central midfield

Not a left *winger* like Martinelli but he can definitely play there.

I was watching a YouTube of Saka’s breakout season at LB. He skinned people down the byline and into the box, no problem whatsoever. Then he moved to RM and perfected his cut-inside, providing more goals.
Recently it seems like he’s stalled, and teams have figured him out at RM.
Maybe the solution to the LM problem, and Saka’s recent troubles on the right is to play him on the left again and Madueke to try on the right?
Move away from inverted wingers and instead let them get balls in from the bylines on their natural sides .. worth a try

He's not unproven, but 100-odd senior games, less than 70 in the Premier League with 13 goals is hardly brimming with experience. The fact many of us are not sure how he will operate or what exactly we have testifies to the fact that he has yet to write his script. He can change many minds over these next few games and this season, but I expect it more likely a lot of influencers will be making excuses for him and saying he has yet to develop than the script we all want which is he is blowing the opposition away and is a nailed-on starter for England in World Cup year. If that happens, it's likely we're probably winning the league.

Neither has been effective enough when it counts. Both are good but limited players hence the continual call for a winger. It’s interesting that there was a debate last year where many were saying we needed a winger before we needed a striker. It seems those same people are now saying we don’t need a winger and criticising those who wanted the striker first for now wanting to complete the set with a winger.

No one on these boards or on social media presumes they could ever live the lives of actual professional footballers and managers. But we watch football, we’re all fanatical about our clubs and we all have an opinion. Most of us are perplexed at some of the decisions that Arteta makes. Havertz and Madueke two cases in point. We’ll see how those go.

But this next signing (if it even happens) will be key. That it took an injury to Havertz to even contemplate seems crazy. To win the league we’re gonna need more than we have, even with all the expenditure. We know what Trossard and Martinelli do and even those who have backed them have admitted it’s not nearly enough. I want us to seriously challenge and for our world class defence and defensive midfield to be complemented with an equally complete attack. We’re almost there. One more step please.

Giving Trossard a wage bump without increasing the length of his contract surely means we're going to have another player who is difficult to sell.

Next year, he'll be over 30 (although I suspect closer to 50), in the final year of his contract, on an increased salary.

Thing is, we have already have two left wingers - both of whom should not be starters at this club… and Madueke does not resemble a meaningful upgrade (obviously hope to be proved wrong). Would also rather not see one of Trossard/Martinelli depreciate in value if Madueke does end up starting at LW. One of those guys needs to be sold now.

…and it’s not ‘sulking’; it’s acknowledging the player as we see him.

All in all, it’s been a decent summer but it needed to be.

It’s been one of the most remarkable summers in the club’s history, in a way - the quantity and straightforwardness of the signings in a clear bid to replicate peak City’s strategy of 22 high
-to-very-high quality players, is pretty much unprecedented for us - and everyone’s sulking when there isn’t really a problem. If we can’t mount a serious challenge for the league with this squad (or be in contention until the January window), it’ll be a failure of coaching, or players’ form dropping off, possibly due to player health issues. You can’t sign all the good players.

That doesn’t mean we’re guaranteed to win the league with this squad, but who wants that? That would be boring.

I do actually have a feeling we’ll do a big old gazzumping of sp*rs for Eze, which would be very funny. Not stressed if we don’t tho.

Another stipulation is that Kiwior if sold, would likely need to be replaced. Although Riccardo Calafiori can provide centre-back cover for Gabriel Magalhaes, he is predominately viewed as a left-back and the departure of Takehiro Tomiyasu also means Arsenal would be light in reserve at the back, should Kiwior depart.

Stade Rennes' Jeremy Jacquet remains appreciated but he is right-footed and is comfortable remaining in France where regular minutes are on offer.

Arsenal were keen on signing Marc Guehi and Dean Huijsen earlier in the window but there is recognition it will prove difficult to entice a top-bracket, ready-made centre-back to the club given William Saliba and Gabriel will undoubtedly remain first choice. Jorrel Hato would also have been reconsidered as a potential option if he was still at Ajax but he has since signed for Chelsea.

No mention of the Mosquera signing here.

The article also gives updates about Lokonga and Zinchenko (no offers apparently for either).

No offence to Leo, he's fone a job but the Eze is off the left , doesn't work is lazy analysis, we have Madueke and Martinelli as go the the byline options a drifter from left as Pires was , gives us variety into a 4-1-4-1 formation for real knock down the door formation or even ball retention Championsleague options.
Starting with Eze at LW and Cala at LB means you have an overlapping overloading option, Eze at LW and Gyork at 9 , means Eze drifting Infield and Gyk to his preferred left starting point.

Eze is an major upgrade on Leo not a replacement of Gabi or Madu

It’s the same with Diaz. Certain footballers play with a rhythm and a purpose which is pleasing to the eye. The really good ones show end product as well. I defer to those who have seen more of them, but I still think they’re better than some are making out. Also, have to say Zubimendi is better than I thought, notwithstanding the physical adjustment needed. But that is also after 1 competitive game and three pre-seasons in an Arsenal shirt. And I wanted Gyökeres but I have to admit feeling a little put out by the presence of Šeško when he came on. Thank fuck he ballsed up that header. I didn’t want to have to live that story.

@Benzed, the briefings from the club towards the end of the season was "an unprecedented summer". Do you feel that they have delivered that?

Not sure how to qualify "unprecedented" to be honest. The only times that spring to mind where we bought so many new players in a window, they were certainly less appealing than this crop collectively. Then again, I rather expected at best Gyökeres/Sesko + Zubimendi + A.Nother. I am happy with our window, and find the criticism over the top. Are there improvements in the market, absolutely - I just don't demand or expect more than what we have seen. I consider myself realistic, rightly or not.
Not helped by us either being poor at convincing other clubs our players are worth a lot of money, not having any expendable players who are good, or not being prepared to bite the bullet and sell players when their stock is high.

Look, I'm totally bricking it that Madueke will stink the joint out be a shocking waste of 50 million. I get that. But I'll give him until Christmas before I make anything like a definitive decision. That's just how I am :)

@Benzed, the briefings from the club towards the end of the season was "an unprecedented summer". Do you feel that they have delivered that? We should always look to ourselves and of course at our rivals to understand how they have strengthened.

Man City have bought some quality players too and are already looking good.

I am hoping that we significantly improve in the way we play and that we have 1 more signing left this summer.

The current brief about us not going for Eze is that we view Eze as a #10 and not a LW and we are open to another player on the left wing if Trossard/Martinelli leave. Neither is Eze happening nor is there a departure of Trossard/Martinelli.

You can understand why a lot of fans are frustrated that we do not seem to be using the transfer window well while our title rivals are.

Last couple of summers, we have been buying players and re-purposing them rather than getting quality specialists.

Havertz, we wanted him to take up Xhaka's role but he did not seem a good fit there and we re-purposed him as a striker, which has worked out well but hardly the role that we bought him for.

Then we had to buy Merino to take up that #8 role. Mikel Merino at times, looks really awkward in the left #8 position but seems more useful as a centre forward.

I think that we could have used the funds better to be honest.

The profiling while selecting attackers, really needs to improve.

I don't think there is much active debate about Martinelli to be honest. I've said for 2 years I like him, he works hard, defensively tremendous, but if he doesn't score twice as many goals and create twice as many for others, I would sell him. Massive season for him, hope he surprises us all but I don't see it personally. I think the left needs to be improved, but also understand that having spent a lot we can't demand it now in the same window (IMO).
northbankfc @ 08:32 | Aug 20, 2025
To me it’s about the rhythm of a team and between players. I think we’ve stopped doing the one-two touch movements. We’re waiting for Ødegaard and Saka to do that, both are still hesitating. Zubimendi is improving that because he sees and executes those direct forward balls. Saka is still at 85% to my eyes. Once he gets to 90% we’ll see a different team. And Gyökeres is still not sharp. It will come. But that left side has to be more incisive. I don’t think Martinelli or Trossard can do that. The jury’s out on Madueke, but it seems our season rests on him being that guy.

“We’re one game in” is another trope, as is the generalisation of “some fans” to mean all fans who criticise. These are not deliberate, they are ways that criticism is deflected by those who don’t like to hear too much criticism. It’s the soft interview technique used in sports, entertainment and politics. Tough questions are weeded out, seen as too “negative”. It’s part of the landscape and ironically leads to more extreme criticism.

I’m not Arteta’s biggest fan but I also feel I’ve given credit where it’s due despite having bigger reservations than most here.

Mechanically branding everyone with a querying voice as perennially miserable or shortsighted isn’t impressive or some sort of marker of emotional maturity or perspicacity.

I don’t care about sides. I care about a club that ought not to be coming up short so frequently breaking that habit.

Lettragged said Ekitike was the best available out there, I hadn’t seen enough of him, but he was right. He said Isak would be available, I said impossible, he was right. I must be humble here, he was genuinely ITK. That first goal by Ekitike was class movement and sharp finishing. He looked good in pre-season too. Reijnders for City as well looks to have carried on where prime De Bruyne left off.

It’s one game, but narratives are already being formed, like it or not.

Kudus was a surefire signing. Looks so strong and comfortable on the ball, a genuine goal threat, intelligent penetrating movement. To overlook him for Madueke who looks awkward on the ball is genuinely maddening, hence the fan reaction, all gaslighted with the usual tropes about keyboard warriors and Arteta knowing more than all of them put together. I don’t believe Kudus would have passed us up if we’d have been in for him. This is what’s maddening. Two years ago we passed him up for Havertz, now for Madueke. Twice we’ve strengthened Chelsea and have to bend over backwards to justify the decisions. Critical fans aren’t critical because they want to be. There are genuine reasons all being shooed away with various rhetorical techniques.

@shrek, "optics" yes - also perception. Some are inclined to be more positive and er, trust the process while others are not - perhaps yourself. You can't IMO be doubtful about Gyökeres and not rate that as a signing, yet hailing Ekitike as a definitive signing of quality. For all the world to see there were 2 major available CF talents (plus it turns out Isak too, but nobody saw that coming and he only revealed it once both us and Liverpool had made their CF moves - and he apparently only wants Liverpool), we got the one most likely to deliver today, it's an absolute positive and a "ceiling raiser". Liverpool signed two wing backs, because they needed them. We don't. Timber, White, MLS, Calafiori are fantastic fullback options. They didn't let Trent go, he walked out on them.
We've played one game, a win away at United (watch other Big 6 teams drop points there this season), we have spent the best part of 200m and the squad looks far better. Maybe each and every one of the players we signed will turn out to be absolute shockers, but why do we need to have this discussion today?
shrek2be @ 07:57 | Aug 20, 2025
We are heavily banking on Madueke to significantly improve his game and become top class on the left wing. That is a huge risk. If he doesn't perform, we are relying on Martinelli and Trossard.

Martinelli has significantly regressed while Trossard although a good player, is getting older.

Liverpool are happy to sell Diaz to Bayern even though he was a quality performer for them.

The other part is Spurs signing Eze and Kudus - 2 players who are better, ability and reputation wise than Madueke currently. I think Eze signing for them has infuriated our fans as this lad is an Arsenal fan and also offers something different to what we currently have,

northbankfc @ 07:56 | Aug 20, 2025
Trossard has been useful, good finisher but lacks strength and athleticism. Martinelli works hard, has pace but lacks creative flair. Madueke has potential but is an unknown quantity for us. As long as results go our way, the complaints from fans will be easy to keep at bay. If results go south, Arsenal doom-o-meter will go into red.

he big problem is the optics around our signings... we have signed 1 world class player in Zubimendi and the remaining are a good prospect in Mosquera, a hopefully quality CF in Gyokeres, a decent-good player like Madueke, 2 backups like Norgarad and Kepa. We are STRUGGLING to get rid of the likes of Vieira, Zinchenko, Nelson, Kiwior etc. Our net spend is £177M including the fees we received for Tavares and Marquinhos excluding addons.

Liverpool have signed Wirtz who is one of the best playmaking talents currently in the world; they have signed Kerkez who is a very exciting left back; Hugo Ekitike who is a highly talented young player as a striker and a quality wing back in Frimpong and also a young CB prospect in Leoni. They have also bought a quality successor for Allison in Mamardashvili. On top of that, they are targeting Isak. THAT is Ambition.

They have also gotten rid of Diaz, Trent, Nunez and Quansah for roughly around £130M. They also let go of a quality creator like Trent. They are getting close to £25-30M for 2 young blokes who have been sold to Bournemouth and Lyon whom we have barely heard of. he big problem is the optics around our signings... we have signed 1 world class player in Zubimendi and the remaining are a good prospect in Mosquera, a hopefully quality CF in Gyokeres, a decent-good player like Madueke, 2 backups like Norgarad and Kepa. Might be a case that players they want for the left are either not available or having spent the money we have done are not affordable. Meaning we have to keep Trossard who is going to have to be content to spend a lot of time on the bench so offer him more money for another season spent as a back up . He’ll probably be sold next year when the money to upgrade will be available.

Absolutely.

But it's a lose/lose for the club unless players absolutely deliver on their potential. If you don't pay the biggest money available on the market, most will leave for another club that will. Commit big money to all, you get caned for those that don't work out long term (like I caned on Nelson below, shame on me). Don't pay up, you get caned for being amateurish and cheap and Not Serious.

I read in a seemingly reputable publication that Kiwior is on 55k pw so I can understand him looking elsewhere for more playing time and likely more money too (perhaps not if he ends up in Porto though?) but also can understand it's not practical to have every single player on 100+k per week even if they are bench dwellers.
Agreeing to give Nelson 100k pw is however a Seriously Bad Call.

It’s the sort of thing that happens with guys who are playing out of their skins, strange in this case. I wonder if he was offended at being put in the shop window and demanded some kind of recompense after it turned out no one wanted him :(

Personally Im hoping he was channeling his inner Adebayor and said “If you want me to play like Saka, pay me like Saka”.
