Imagine Isak on the left. Martinelli to switch in and out as games dictate.
I think Uncle Stan needs to dip into his pocket and give us a loan until we sell Trossard, Zinchenko, whoever else needs to...
That's the thing. It reminds me of the van Persie summer where if we keep him we win the title, if united get him they win the title, and we all know how that went.

The major contenders have all strengthened well this summer and yet everyone's #1 target is still out there and apparently available. If Isak were indeed to move, wherever he goes will immediately become massive title favourites, he tips the scales that much.

Or we can sell Gunnersaurus to ourselves for £100M. Right?

He’s a boyhood Gooner and went to our academy at some point.

But as we’ve seen with many players they will go where the job is if their preferred club isn’t interested enough :(

I don't think thats true. Part of our struggles yesterday is not understanding each other's movement in transition. But the desire to play the quick through ball was there. That one sequence where Mount took the ball from Saka on the wing started with probably a 35 yard through ball from deep in midfield... that is a ball not often played. Typically we walk the ball up so our shape is set and we mitigate the risk of a turnover and counterattack.

Yeah, it's a bit of a trip. Tbh a few problems with the place we've booked, awful stink from the drains and they've barely got any perfume sticks to mask it. But at least there's A/C here too (and wifi) and it's only four days before we head back up to Campania again, and find a place to watch the Leeds match and then we'll go back up to Milan for a few days and be back in England for the Liverpool game.

Watching tha game it was clear to me our biggest failing was incompetence on our counter attacks. Get a couple of those right and the world looks very different.
As James points ...
"significant improvement in our counter game will make us much more effective"
and counter-attacking skills don't just happen overnight. It seems like we've been spending a number of seasons ignoring that skillset entirely so it might take some time to get it back. but with Vik, Saka and Martinelli** (and Havertz, apparently) we have front players who should be able to do it.

**people love to slag Lil Gabi but that's one thing he's always be good at, breaking away from a defender on the counter and bearing down on a keeper.

I was desperate for a centre-forward, have been for years. Wasn’t fussy, Šeško of Gyökeres (didn’t think Isak was available) but had a preference for Vik as he was a seasoned goalscorer. But ultimately I judge on performances with us. He has two massive games now. Imperative he gets off the mark against Leeds and then he has to bring us something from Anfield. There’ll be no excuses, this is the level, this is the pressure. He has to deliver.

good morning (or whatever) winners!

I wonder if our frequent difficulties at Old Trafford is not about us but about them. It's amazing how often mid-table sides, in general, are well up for facing us for some reason and save their best for it. Maybe that's part of it, our rivalry is stuck in United's craw and they bring an extra level facing us. That performance looked like a team trying to prove a point, particularly their new boys.

If you watch that compilation of all the transitions we had at OT- it was very positive that we added that new dimension of playing through the middle third very quickly instead of walking the ball up and allowing the defense to set. We had a lot of opportunities to really pressure them.

The reality is our guys looked like deer in headlights having not played that way for probably 3 seasons. Those automatisms weren't present if we are being kind but you would think professional footballers at this level have those instincts built in.

If we could sort a few of those out, it would go a long way. And while I'm hopeful for Madueke, he's nowhere near the level of Martinelli or Saka defending. We need to address that as well if Madueke is going to be the main LW.

3 points!
Watching tha game it was clear to me our biggest failing was incompetence on our counter attacks. Get a couple of those right and the world looks very different.
As James points out in his Athletic piece, Arteta admitted this:
“ There were seven, eight situations when the ball is completely open to play through and we are on and we’re attacking the ‘keeper,” lamented Arteta. “And we give that ball away and then it becomes a basketball game.”
Even without a significant upgrade at left wing (which we need) some significant improvement in our counter game will make us much more effective. This seems very doable!

Rival managers say a lot of things about other players. Martinelli of two years ago was a prospect. Martinelli now has stalled, that’s the best I can say. Works hard, great pace and a fair call to say he’s being used wrong, not given space to run. But the work in the final third is shocking.

Diaz may have his critics but I see the way he carries the ball, his balance, control, his passing and shooting, it’s just miles ahead of Gabi. I’m not wanting to big up Liverpool fans over us. Our fans (generally) show loyalty to players especially youth team players. But patience with Gabi is wearing thin I think. I don’t see him ever being a pure footballer, more a utility player, useful to tire full-backs and to secure the wing defensively. We need a proper footballer there. Diaz would have been great there.
goldsoundz @ 12:35 | Aug 18, 2025
-I can't see fucking Porto paying what Kiwior should command
-I can see Martinelli turning into a specialist winger when we are up against a top wide man or need to close out a game. Not writing him off just yet but time is really running out.
-Yesterday's performance at OT was our floor and we won so that is definitely a positive
-Gyokeres and Madueke really haven't had a preseason so definitely need to give them some time

There was plenty of chat from the likes of Ornstein that said Madueke would not prevent Arsenal from signing another, Eze etc

But in his brief time to date Madueke has only played on the left and I find it hard to believe Arsenal would sign a bloke to back up Saka for £52m. Madueke is almost certainly the new left sided player.

Nelli was mostly anonymous - not all his fault, we couldn’t string 5 passes together or get the out-ball to him on a counterattack which is probably his greatest attacking strength.

On every fast break opportunity we had our front three were almost in each others’ way, and our midfielders kept picking the wrong pass or fluffed it.

So yeah, maybe Noni deserves a chance- if he has that Kanu style of unpredictability in his game - that Nelli lacks - we might have more chances in a game where the oppo will surely sit back and defend.

No doom and gloom here. Sub par performances from half our team yesterday resulting in an ugly win v the Mancs on a tricky opening day fixture should still be enjoyed. Especially with all the other fans boiling their piss over ‘lucky’ Arsenal.

If Utd play like this for their season, they’ll take big points from our rivals. We got our three points, thank you very much.
malaisegooner @ 10:43 | Aug 18, 2025
It all depends on outgoings happening first I suppose. Berta has earned a lot of goodwill so far and I trust he'll sort things out before the window closes.
malaisegooner @ 10:38 | Aug 18, 2025
Okay.. So Eze ain't happening because we extended Nwaneri. That's well and good but I thought it was mooted that we are still on the lookout for a (left sided) attacker despite having signed Madueke? Or did I just imagine that?

I agree. Martinelli has already hit his ceiling by this point in his Arsenal career and he's just not good enough as the main LW of a team with title aspirations.

Yet we are stuck with him. Can only hope Noni improves in leaps and bounds. Can we afford to wait for that to happen though?

There is an argument that it wasn’t because of injuries last season or rustiness (why rustiness anyway? Did Man City and Liverpool look rusty?). Martinelli is Exhibit A. The argument is that we lack creative attacking players or Arteta’s tactics are stultifying.. or both! We can only avoid this conclusion for so long. We look pedestrian in attack and have done for some time. The horseshoe passing, the delays, the lack of rhythm and dynamism. You can’t keep excusing it. We must improve quickly. Liverpool and City already look good. We don’t.
mb1968 @ 09:56 | Aug 18, 2025
As everyone says and is obvious great result poor performance. Defence was ok although I did not see it as much whilst watching but we created lots of opportunities to break away and messed them up all up it was not just one player all the forwards did it. My main point is Saka was pocketed by Shaw this was not just a case of doubled up he was just totally done. Martinelli was better just because he offered defensive support and he should have stayed on and Saka should have been subbed for Mad. We won’t make that many errors every week, we will get better so job done today

There’s an awkwardness to Madueke that makes an awkward attack look even more pedestrian. The price tag (and who we bought off) and expectation and need for variation in attack will inevitably result in intense criticism. Ditto for Gyökeres. They haven’t got time. Narratives are already solidifying. We need goals from Vik and creativity from Noni… and double-quick!

I know, and I’m all for backing every new signing. Maybe starting him v Leeds isn’t the worst suggestion. I just felt he looked clueless when Diallo danced past him twice. If they’d have turned into goals, he’d have been absolutely caned for those moments. He’s not a defender and hasn’t had that bit drilled into him (yet ;)

I was watching in a crowded pub on a big screen, so didn’t see any replays of the miss at the end - as blogs just noted, if there was a defender’s touch maybe it just looked worse in real time than it actually was.

It can only get better, then. A big performance back home v Leeds will calm the nerves.

I would be tempted to start Madueke vs Leeds
I know he barely had any time, but nothing positive to see in Madueke yesterday.
He got completely schooled twice at the back by Diallo, both could easily have ended up in goals. His first touch and control was awful, and he looked lost when he did have it - then the tap-in miss looked woeful on the screen. Probably harder than it looked, but it just gave me Sanogo vibes.

Not just him though. We were sluggish throughout- Saka looked slow and was barely fed the ball, and Nelli on the other side struggled to find any space at all.

Credit to Utd, they were first to everything, and clearly decided to play the cross field pass to the wings in the gaps left by Cala and white. They executed those passes superbly, while we were still in holiday mode.

So, resilience and the ability to win ugly is the positive to take from this. We can’t afford to be so sleepy in our next away game (Anfield) - we’ll be absolutely destroyed if we play in the same manner.

No cohesion in the Arsenal team- upfront was a complete mess. I appreciate it's very early days.
Gyok drifting right and crossing to where he should have been. Madueke if not maddening -slightly frustrating.
Martinelli - to his credit did a lot of work- but when did he last look really dangerous?
First half centre backs looked like they would have preferred Dec in front of them.
Rice by his standards anonymous in open play. Corner a peach. Injured? Were we playing with a full Dec?
Newish team, newish formation - but we were playing a team in a similar position. Almost the diametric opposite of what we hoped for from Zubi, Gyok and Madu.
Had an 80s feel to it. When people refer to Gyok as an old fashioned CF -hope they are not thinking of Ray Hankin.
Or John Hawley for that matter.

I suspect that if we continue to stick to our new tactic and lineup (Both White and Calafiori suggests an attacking mindset), we may ask one of the fullbacks to invert as both Rice and Zubimendi will require help in big games.

I worried Zubimemdi would struggle with the physical aspects in cut and thrust games and he had an early taste of that.he rallied well and found his game but I think he’ll be outmuscled and out hustled a lot in those kind of games.

Gyökeres might be unfit but it was a bit worrying how cumbersome he looked on the ball. He wasn’t alone in that at least.

But 3 points at Old Trafford, a good start. We’re gonna have to improve massively to get anything after Leeds. Let’s use that game to get some rhythm into our attack.

It’s not just us but the man in black/blue

I could do with us playing better and enjoying the whole match. Raya can’t be that good all season
He had me worried for a bit.

Just pleased we don’t have to go back there this season
Beware, the cup fixtures. But yes, a hard fixture successfully navigated.

Arse. WiB.

Morning all.

The team in general were poor yesterday. You might call it rustiness, but whatever it was they will need to get much better quickly. Gyokeres looks like he wasn't even nearly match fit, he needs a couple more weeks of training. Zubimendi looked surprised by the physicality of the Premier League. Even the normally unflappable Salibe looked somewhat off his normal level. Hopefully the team can hit their stride against Leeds on Saturday, but I'll take a scruffy 1-0 win at Old Trafford all day long.

I kinda like beating them in a scruffy way. Perhaps, it hurts more than outplaying them.

I loved some of our defending.
