Our attacking play has been nullified, we need to evolve and we need at least one more attacking player. We need creativity from the centre.

A couple of things to add

Positives

- Mosquera 3 looks great.. fit right in.
- Dowman was on for only 15 minutes.. did more than Martinelli.

Negatives

- agreed with all esp with MLS.. doesn’t need to draw the foul so often. We actually need to play. He will get caught this season.

- the defence is a big worry without Gabriel.

- the slow passing and not playing runners in. I noticed Martinelli wasn’t running as wide as much because he kept making runs and was constantly ignored. Big Vik barely had a touch in the first half but he was making runs all the time. Kept getting ignored.

I think we need a 10 - not position but play making. Absolutely nothing went through the middle.

I hope to god that this isn't true. I shall be spitting tacks if it is.

Real Madrid have agreed to swap Brazilian winger Rodrygo for Arsenal centre-back William Saliba with the Gunners this summer, according to reports. I agree 100%. There was one ocaission in the second half that I thought epitomised our game where there was a break, great distribution from the keeper in to MLS and instead of progressing he slowed up put his foot on the ball and played a 6 yard pass sideways. This seems to be unlike his natural tendency especially when we were losing. It has to be the coaching instructions.
rockymtn_gooner @ 22:46 | Aug 6, 2025
Martinelli wasn't terrible. As others have said, it's bigger problem. They too often slow play down rather than progressing rapidly and hitting through balls. That takes away a big strength of both Martinelli and Gyokeres.
And the crossing wasn't great, both because too many of them were easy and because none of the attackers were making near post runs.

This. The manager has had 2+ years to figure out how to build a functioning attack. The left side is now a sclerotic limb.

Maybe he'll magically fix in two weeks what he hasn't in years.

We had a load of new players and the team played exactly the same as last season.

Which means it doesn't matter who plays because teams have worked how to beat Arteta. Let us have possession, let us try to wriggle in from the wings through 3-6 defenders, let us try to thread 53 intricate passes through the middle.... and so on.

Then score easily with the sucker punch, because the whole team has been literally sucked into relentless futile attacks, so that when the punch comes we're not ready.

The England ladies team came back from losing potions over and over again. This Arsenal side have done that like twice in 70 odd games...

Arteta-ball is always going to be more George Graham than Arsene Wenger. He's styled himself on Pep. It's all about control and the use of data, hence the purchase of Madueke, who tbh in his cameo, looks a bit sloppy and slap-dash.

Once he gets all his players back and up to speed, the team will be solid and consistent. It will devastate teams, but will we ever excite fans the way Liverpool will? They had the money to buy Wirtz and Etitike. I'm still glad we have Zubimendi and Gyökeres, but boy do we need an upgrade on Martinelli, he's just nowhere near good enough for what we have a head of us. Pre-season or not, this was poor throughout, stunted passing, lack of cohesion, very little service to the big centre-forward.

A lot of work to do...

I don’t need anyone to take me seriously. I don’t take the domestic cups seriously. A club that’s spent over half a billion pounds in players over the last few years shouldn’t be thinking of anything else but league and champions league. The idea that winning a domestic cup makes up for the failure to win the two important trophies is a canard that you and others bring up like it’s a salve. Even with a full team in every round (which would detract from a title push) there’s no guarantee with a cup. Why keep on bringing it up like it means anything? Oh we’re gonna struggle in the league. Let’s concentrate on the cups. Let’s reaaaallly concentrate and we might win a cup. Yippeee!!! Please 🙄

If we can afford to keep them and if they want to stay, then of course we should keep them. But those first two conditions have to be met, that's all that's being said. If we need to see to buy, then there are still a few players who I would like to see go before Kiwior or Martinelli.

Yes. At present, we have exactly the same number of midfielders as last season. Only difference is everyone is currently fit.
The difference is that all four midfielders are solid and dependable and three of them score goals regularly. That's a significant upgrade, which includes a Xavi-like controller of tempo and space. I'm not complaining. But another creative midfielder/forward would be good too.

We've bought, what, six or seven players and it looks like we'll have sold 6 or 7 players. We've not exactly bolstered the squad with numbers, but rather with quality. Kiwior is a good player, would be sad to see him go. But I've seen 15 minutes of Mosquera which seems enough for me to say he's going to play a huge part in the season. He looks like he could play left or right centre. It's early days, no idea if he can handle the pressure of a sustained run, but he looks like a class player on the ball and has that stature. And then there's Jacquet...

I'm more willing us to offload Vieira, Reiss, Lokonga etc. Let's move on from those expensive mistakes. And let's get in one more forward, winger. The Eze talk has gone very quiet.

And tonight has to be the night for Madueke and Big Vik

It’s a feeling that never goes away. Even now whenever I get a chance to go to games with my two girls, even though they are grown up, I still get that sort of kick

Not sure if 'Fuck off Bruce' is available on our roster of player names in stores. 😜

I suppose custom names are still charged per letter?

I'm trying hard not to imagine that!
Madueke looked at ease btw. I hope he starts on the left.
And of course I hope Gyökeres starts.

My Girondins de Bordeaux 1987 is obviously pretty much intact, but I think I've played in it less often overall, particularly as it has long sleeves.

If the quality is perfect, it's better than the official stuff. :-p
I was musing the other day that the JVC on my original 1991 shirt is still in perfect condition (the Adidas logo is completely gone a long time ago), while most of my Fly Emirates (including my most recent that must have been early 2010s, it's the one Puma I have, an away yellow) have the sponsor peeling off to some extent.
Think the O2 are mostly OK though the blackcurrant final season at Highbury has started to fail.

I def agree Wilshere’s return is linked to Dowman. I also remember it being reported that the family voiced disapproval at Arsenal for not doing more to keep him after he left for Norwich.
Obviously a close connection there.
