iclass @ 04:49 | Jul 11, 2025
“Arsenal's sports director, Andrea Berta, arrived in Lisbon on Friday and left the capital of Portugal on Monday and with his hands waving, unable to take OK for the hiring of Gyokeres. The greens and whites want 80 million euros, achievable, but not through the formula that Berta presented: 65 million euros fixed plus 15 for objectives, even if 5 million were easy to achieve. The lions want another 5 million in the fixed figure, with 10 in variables. And they don't go down a cent from 70+10.”

Begs the question, how badly do the management want this player. All the time spent on the negotiation suggests we are mad keen so then the nit picking over the payment schedule seems ludicrous

This was their entire gambit. I left a lengthier post about it on Tim's article, but yeah, they basically jacked up their holdings, sold stuff to themselves to cover it and now can sell those assets to cover PSR going forward. It was as clever as it was sketchy.

You can really only shake your head and laugh at that sort of thing. I remember dad telling me a story about a time he was driving down his road in ice and snow and a lady who was parked at the curb suddenly shot out to do a u-turn right in front of him. Of course he slide into her, unavoidable. She gets out and absolutely loses her shit on him... until she noticed who she was screaming at, a softball teammate for many years. She still blamed him for the accident though because she figured that illegal u-turn made it somehow magically her right-of-way. ha ha 🙄

I double parked in the high street waiting to nab a space. A Big 4x4 wanted to come by the other way. I gave some room, but another car came the other way and blocked her. She wound down her window and screamed at me like a child that I move. It was like gentry speaking to a servant. It was ugly. The whole street stopped to gawp and I had to make a joke to the shop keeper. I strained myself and just called her a very rude woman, but my oh my it was ugly the way she screamed. It felt very Surrey and very Haslemere. I love the surrounding countryside, but does have a blue rinse, self-important old-school Tory feel about it. Mbappe is a goalscorer and the main man in any forward line-up. That his pace means he can come off the wing to score is an dded feature to his game (like a certain No 14 we knew). But put him in a one on one or give him half a chance and he will score. That's what he does. Havertz is not that guy. Gyökeres could be another type of that guy. Much more central but just as devastating in front of goal. Arsenal desperately need that. Most fans and rival fans see it. I can't believe there are still those who don't.

Really? Aside from the vicious stuff online, its and lots of Arsenal fans are saying the same. It's the striker, it's all about the striker. I guarantee you when we sign Gyökeres the fanbase will go mental, it will be like the release of a poison. It shouldn't have taken three years and it shouldn't stop at Gyökeres. There's too much emphasis on technicians who can carry out precise instructions. Clive said it best when he said we just need someone who can hit the ball really hard (and cleanly).

I meticulously explained that focusing on the extreme elements of the reaction detracts from the general point being made and so you go ahead and do just that as if I had never made the point or you had not read what I said. The extreme examples are irrelevant to the point I'm making that most fans feel that the priority for the past three seasons has been a striker and Arsenal have shown bad optics by not completing the deal for Gyökeres before making it known they would spent £50m on a player most fans don't immediately think we need.

You can dismiss all that, but you can't pretend you don't know what they're talking about. That's just disingenuous. Havertz is not a pure striker, neither is Jesus, hence all the pretend egg heads saying that fans "don't know ball" because they can't see what geniuses they both are. Gyökeres is a pure striker. We lack a striker, we have lacked a proper striker for three years, since Auba left (no, Jesus doesn't count). Whatever the influencers close to the club say, the narrative is that we have lacked a striker for three years and blew three opportunities to win the league because of it. Now, we've bought two defensive midfielders, a goalkeeper and the striker that the majority of the support is craving for, dangled over our heads, has now been snatched away over a £50m for a player that doesn't register.

You can do what everyone does and make a big thing of the extreme views in order to overshadow the fact that the reaction makes perfect sense. Some express it way over the top, but that should not overshadow that the point being made is shared by many, many Arsenal fans and I actually detest more those smug influencers who try to make out that if you reject a player, if you do not want a player, and if you get mad at the manager for failing for three years to get a striker and then teasing us with a completely different player at the last minute, you're absolutely gonna have to expect the reaction that has happened on X. It doesn't take away that the overall point, aside from the extreme expressions, is a completely logical and valid one from the point of view of the fans and what they are made aware of.

It's the timing, the clear haggling over the Gyökeres deal when he's done so much to make himself available, even reportedly taking a cut in wages or signing on fee. And we can't let €5m slide? They could have wrapped the deal up by yesterday and the Madueke interest wouldn't even register. KIt's called optics, and Arsenal hierarchy are still amateurs when it comes to that. The old Hill-Wood Etonian aristocratic disdain for the masses and the need to inform them or play to them I think still wafts through the Emirates. Berta has to work very hard to buck that trend.

Because you don't agree to pay what the selling club want.

It's like you buying a house... If the sellers want an extra £50k, you don't simply pay it, because it's a major amount to just "pony up".. It would affect your mortgage amount.

Why are we still waiting on Gyökeres? If they had signed him and the Madueke story came out there wouldn't have been anywhere near the vitriol. Arsenal and Sporting are still €5m apart with both sides refusing to budge. Why play hardball, this is our marquee signing. Quibbling over €5m looks cheap and unclasp. Come on Arsenal! I would have the tickets in my basket but it would ask me to login.. even though I was already logged in. This happened 5 times and then it was that “ suspicious activity” was coming from my network. Find another device or network.

Mailed box office - got a reply saying something was wrong with their system - they would send me a payment link soon. That was on two days ago.

Think a fit Jesus would likely eradicate the perceived need to buy a RW... but then you have to Nwaneri who can play there and Eze who is the best competition we could hope to sign at CAM.

A loan for Madueke I think I could get behind.
s.p2 @ 13:12 | Jul 10, 2025
For the record, if the remaining signings comprise Gyokeres, Eze and Mosquera, I'll be pretty happy.

Feel like most fans would be. Left side could definitely use a revamp but I can totally acknowledge that it's hard to do everything in one window.
myleftwingfoot @ 13:12 | Jul 10, 2025
Social media allows people, some argue deliberately, to promote thier very worse behaviour. No player should be getting abuse, especially one that hasn't even signed for the club and has not done anything wrong. Those people are the scum of the earth.

Ben Jacobs: "Arsenal expected to approach Crystal Palace to formally discuss Eberechi Eze. Palace attacker still high in #AFC’s thinking, as revealed. It follows positive talks with the player camp. Eze separate to Noni Madueke talks."

How can anyone say that Madueke is separate to the Eze interest? If we're quibbling over terms with Vik and likely to do so with Eze, it's not a separate issue that we spend another £50m+ on a separate player. Unless we end up with all three, which I'm gonna have to believe we will, because if we get Madueke and not Eze, there ain't a fire in hell that will burn hotter than Arsenal fans' fury and no amount of smug hipster Arsenal influencer put-downs will quench that fire!

It's sad to witness on social media. Madueke has been like a lightning rod for Arsenal in-fighting. You get the extreme opposition "If Arteta signs Madueke, I'm officially Arteta Out!", and apparently yMadueke is getting abuse from Arsenal fans. Cue on the exact opposite of the spectrum, commentators who say things like "I will not judge till the transfer window is shut, I will not judge until the end of the season. In fact, whoever comes in I support 100%". They then add that they're the real fans and they "question" the loyalty of fans who object to certain signings. I really detest this kind of debasement of support on one side and hipsterisation of support on the other. Do these Loyalists know anything about what Ultras fans do in Spain and Italy when they don't like a signing? Who is anyone to decide who is a "real" Arsenal fan? I detest that kind of superciliousness!

It doesn't mean that the overall reaction of Arsenal fans to the potential signing of Madueke (which is only slightly correlated with the social media trending posts) isn't a valid one. We made the most of the Havertz deal. There was a massive reaction and he has grown as a player and an intrinsic part of the team. Blogs said we missed him in the run-in. No doubt. But that was also because we didn't have a single striker in our senior team. It was Havertz and then perhaps Jesus. It doesn't mean that Havertz was the best buy we could have got for £65m at the time. But that's water under the bridge. I realise nothing we say changes anything, but I'm just hoping that deal doesn't go through. But the fact Arteta is even serious about it makes me feel a little sad of our manager's understanding of what a top attack needs. I may well be full of shit too. Maybe Madueke is the perfect signing. But I just don't see it.

My concern isn't madueke himself, it's spending £50M on backup player, and the fact that our scouting department seems to be "who have A.N.Other recently spend £20-30M on that we can sign for more.

While I don't approve of return of the #chelseatalenthoover at least they are scouting and signing young players to develop/play/sell.

Rodryo wages demands said to be 300k a week , that's double Odegaard , Saliba etc.. would upset the dressing room...one of the same reasons we not looking like going for Sesko. Nomi heard would be around 100k, fits much better in . Heard pundits say Nomi plays well from. The left wing as well. Tho. Chelsea , had Neto ,sterling , mudrik, etc on the left so rarely played him there .. a two wing player ,
Imo we should be more fluid and like we Saka pops up in middle of switch to left wing , which we saw sometimes last season when Merino was false 9.. especially when Saka gets double teamed...

Got errors repeatedly when I tried to open these arses first (long after first though).

Morning all! Well in iclass!

The thing about fans opinions, is that, because of social media there tends to be this accepted disdain for them, as if we are as a whole unhinged and knowing nothing about football. Why would a serious club NOT take the fans' opinions at least into consideration? They do love their club, they do watch the games, they do have views on other players. I think at the very least, Arteta and co. should pause at the visceral reaction to the news we're bidding £50+ for an understudy to Saka. Even if we get Gyökeres AND Eze, there will be a lot of us wondering if we could have got the Rodrygo deal over the line, Xavi Simons, Ademola Lookman? All players you can guarantee will get better reactions if we're making offers for them. Generally, fans know a lot more than some commentators give them credit for.

Arse! Well in iclass

If we pay Chavs 50m+ for Madueke, I would seriously have doubts about Chelsea greasing some palms in our recruitment department over last few years.

Offer 15-20m tops and walk away if they don't agree. They have more to lose.

No mention of who Ben White is most excited to see, on his first day of preseason?...

Arse. Well in class.

Morning all.

Underwhelmed by Madueke too. Hopefully it's a smokescreen for another target, with the striker situation it seems that Berta likes to keep several irons in the fire...
I don't think it's any kind of smokescreen

How's the groin?
Bit sore when I change from sitting to standing but apart from that surprisingly ok at the moment, thanks
Currently trying to work out how much Lactulose I need to take without overdoing it
