Morning all!

The “football manager” meme. An old excuse. Just saw a clip of Gary Neville saying Arteta is rare in not winning anything for five years and his job being safe. He mentioned we have only bought one striker in seven years.

A massive club like Arsenal with all the resources at its disposal (anything from £500m to £750m spent in his tenure) really has no excuse for not buying several forwards, young ones, expensive ones, old ones who can still do a job.

I’ve calmed down a lot since yesterday, that was the irritability of going without my herbal pacifier, always bad for a day. And that first half they looked shellshocked.

We do need an overhaul up front imo. Despite his goal, Martinelli ain’t that guy. And neither is Havertz and tbh neither is Ødegaard. But fans and manager will persist. That’s what’s most frustrating, the fetishisation of good but not great players.

Which brings me to another question. When we clinch the PL title on the final day, do we get a guard of honour from our first opponent of the following season?

Yes. Let's continue to celebrate stupid, meaningless mini-moral victories and guffaw at clubs who several years prior actually managed to string together a few successful runs.

Everton is hyperbole, obviously, but my god - if you're going to support Arsenal and tout Arsenal as a big club then you need to see it moving like a big club more often.

Having a proper target man or two helps the midfield, a player who knows how to find and use space is invaluable and could help alleviate some of the pressure on the rest of the team.
I felt the team were a bit more relaxed during the second half and that helped.

I think the crowd's ire should be turned on Real Madrid. We've been stung enough times by Real and Barca repeatedly using the same game plan to link themselves in public to players and pursue a relentless ampaign.

It even happened to Bayern Munich. The targeted player plays down his contract and Real or Barca walk off grinning.

They did the same to PSG with Mbappe.

I detest both these clubs, especially when they have the gall to play the victim. Jeez, why weren't Barca relegated to the bottom tier for bribing referees?

If we were still doing "he'll do" we'd have got someone in to help maintain a title challenge in the second half of the season. In the same transfer window we spent sn inordinate time chasing a back-up keeper for an extortionate amount and then we're shocked that the club held fast to their valuation which had been communicated from day one.

I have a little rant on here now and then, but like you, I'll reserve judgment until the transfer window is shut. I'm getting a good vibe from Berta, but if we get a player in I think is not of the standard required for this club I'll rant. And I may be totally wrong as well. Tbh, I'm wondering if we'll ever compete as a big club. It somehow felt more doable even a couple of years ago. This season was a step back, but Arteta has steadied the ship, I probably need to lower expectations, but I know this club can do better.

We're all just shooting the breeze. Some really don't like the ranters and boomers. I get that. But believe me, this is me in a calm state, accepting that we may not get all the targets the Playstation dreamers are hoping for!

There's a very strong nagging doubt about Gyökeres based on his age, history and the strength of the Primeira Liga. It had echoes of Darwin Nunez, another seeming powerhouse.
joker @ 12:50 | May 11, 2025
I'm looking forward to the upcoming transfer window. I think it's clear substantial investment in elite talent is required for us to compete for the PL and CL. There's no doubt about what we have to do and in part thanks to our lack of spending in January we should have the funds necessary. I will be shocked if we don't bring in at least one top quality centre forward and wide player. It looks like we're already addressing central midfield with Zubimendi and possible backup or competition for Raya with Joan Garcia so that's a good start.

For centre forward my preference has always been Isak (almost certainly a pipe dream) or Sesko, but if our primary target is Gyokeres then I trust the decision making of the people at the club. They understand what they want to do with the team and what it needs to achieve that more than we do. I've also read links to Liam Delap. I know almost nothing about him but after watching highlights he looks strong, quick and tenacious with a solid shot. He doesn't look afraid to take the ball on and try to be a difference maker.

This is something I think we need more of. Far too many of our players, either through instruction or just because it's what they're more comfortable doing, simply pass the ball on to a teammate to progress play rather than try to engineer something themselves. The only one who sometimes tries to carry the ball forward through the lines is Rice and when he does it often causes teams problems. It would be useful to have more players with this skill and mindset.

Actually the suggestion that we are getting a player who will allow Rice to play further up the pitch is quite exciting
The understanding that he will be quicker or thought, movement and tactical awareness than Partey might be offset by the real likelihood that he won’t have the physicality to win one-on-one duels in a key area of the pitch or deliver the kind of forward (sorry, “vertical” 🙄) balls that Partey was so good at. It’s tough finding a like-for-like, but we really do need a central, creative midfielder as well. Ødegaard isn’t nearly enough and Nwaneri is still young.

Actually the suggestion that we are getting a player who will allow Rice to play further up the pitch is quite exciting

Pick either Gyokeres or Sesko, whatever profile fits best, and get Delap as the younger backup.

Opinion seems to be divided on the matter. I like Gyökeres, the way he moves, his strength and balance, reminds me of Batistuta, which is perhaps over-egging it. But the arguments that he’s only doing it in a weak league and against generally weak European opposition might have some merit. Šeško is young, room for development, he does seem a bit wooden but boy what power in his striking. If he had struck that Ødegaard ball I don’t care how big and stretchy Donnarumma is, he wouldn’t have got to it. Anyway, yeah, just pointless speculation, that’s a last day of the transfer window purchase. That’s why it’s sooooo frustrating now. Deferred gratification… without the gratification 😊

Yep. Although sometimes even a decent rather than absolutely elite striker would have meant we’d won more games. Havertz and Merino have done well but just don’t make the number 9 runs we still seem to cross for…

Won’t happen but I’d really like us to sign two strikers. Cover for adaptation, dips in form and the inevitable injuries. Be a great statement of intent.

But Blogs, If you can’t lose you mind in May over a transfer that hasn’t happened yet - what is then all about?
There’s something to be said for the expression of frustration borne from years of doing this, of knowing that the next three months is going to be full of speculation, stories, the same rehashed arguments from optimists (who love to be negative about cynics) and cynics who can’t bear the thought of three months ending with a WTF?! and then being told to “judge them at the end of the season”. This “it’s only May and look at all these cynics losing their minds and exploding into dust because we haven’t signed a striker” is far more lame than all the cynics saying “let’s be honest now and save the stress, we’re not going to get the players we need.” No one’s “losing their mind in May”. We’re just tired, so tired of the same old merry-go-round.

Soon followed by a: “Well why don’t you go support another club?”

It’s so lame, all of it. Right now I don’t see any joy in it. This is a multi-million pound club which is getting ever more corporate, evermore expensive and right now I don’t see much joy in any of it. Sorry, didn’t take my medication this morning. But it is lame.

Zubimendi and Garcia. Yawn! Way to go to get the fans excited.

I'm glad the permutationists at the postal place have been permuntasionilizing potential permutations. This saves me personally pondering and percolating the permutations thus practically putting my peanut at peace.

Morning all. Have to say, I'm uncomfortable with the prospect of another change of keeper. You have to wonder what Caña actually does wrt actual coaching if we keep swapping out goalies every two seasons for no obvious or compelling reason. tbh, I didn't think there was any desperate need to replace Leno or Ramsdale. Call me old fashioned, but I like the idea of having a long-term first choice glove butler. How long was Seaman around? Twelve, thirteen years? Them were the days.

Chelsea have to play Newcastle and also Forest so points will get dropped in their games so I think 2 points from our last three games will guarantee a top five finish at worst

Is Champions League qualification guaranteed at this stage already? Looking at the table, it seems we can still end up 7th, or am I missing something?

“If we get to the end of August and the message is ‘We couldn’t buy a striker because we spent all the money on a moderately priced goalkeeper’, then I’ll be handing out the pitchforks and flaming torches myself.”

Bookmarked. If we don’t get the best striker available for the sake of a few million, this will be necessary. I don’t want any roll-back on “we have a striker, so what if he cost £20m and comes from Stoke. You wanted a striker? You have one. You Arsenal fans are never happy.” Šeško, or Osimhen or Gyökeres. And another top forward. I don’t see it, I see penny pinching ahead.

Anyway, a loooomg way to go. Win today please

Could be an interesting line up for todays match, it might give us an idea of which players are in the doghouse and going on the not required list.
On the possible Garcia transfer, why would a first team regular especially a goalie leave a club to become a benchwarmer, Could it be that Raya is out of favour and about to be sold or benched?

Away from the gossip and on to the final three games I believe we have to win all 3 to get some sort of confidence back into the club. We have hit a low point after the semi loss and having the season Peter out and finishing trophyless again. The affect on some of our better players might lead to their heads being turned if the season ends on a particularly sour note.

So 9 from 9 please Mikel.

I very much want second place tied up. I accept it's meaningless given the gap with Liverpool and also accept the chances of dropping to 6th are infinitesimal, but more dropped points in the last games of an exceptionally disappointing Premier League season will be rubbing salt into an open wound.

I don't want to see us scrabbling around for a striker at the end of the transfer window for a striker blogs, we should have one in place for pre-season, ready to go on 16th August.
