Doomed?

My take:
Abysmal recruitment and lack of creative freedom killed us. But with the injuries we’ve had it was always going to be really hard to achieve anything this season.

Now a well earned rest (for me) until we sign a fucking player.

Look I think we deserved to be in the semis. We were one of the most consistent teams in the league stage and we never looked out of our depth. We competed well and we had our chances. I understand his perspective and he’s obviously an emotional manager. But clearly something for him to work on. Not something for public consumption.

Sell high.
Timber is currently 1st choice RB.
MLS and Calafiori for LB.

Gabriel and Saliba are the 1st choice CB partnership.

That leaves White, Tomiyasu and Calafiori as back up CB options.
Sell ...
"If Tomiyasu isn't ready, he should be replaced"
Therein lies the problem. I agree in selling high... but not if you're just going to spunk as much, if not more, in replacing the asset. Maybe we'll go into next season with Tomi, Cali, White, Timber as the only, flexible but risky, CB backups but I'd be surprised.

I think you look at the final four teams this year though and we had too few nimble players with pace who can carry the ball in transition. Relying on long throws into the box is definitely not it.
ausgunner @ 21:16 | May 7, 2025
Great effort against a brilliant team. Left it all out there with very thin resources which told in the end. Beyond the goals, a pretty even contest, perhaps one we edged. Under the circumstances, that’s really impressive. I didn’t really fancy us to trouble them overmuch tonight but we were pretty much a constant hassle and Donnarumma made some worldies. So much better than the Bayern tie last season.

No patience for entitled temper tantrums from armchair managers. Losing European semi-finals is a fact of life, that is if you have the skill, courage and fortune to get there in the first place, which we seldom have in 70 years. Shit happens. That’s football. I’m pretty confident we’ll meaningfully strengthen our squad and some players will come back into form next season, and we still might not get this far in Europe next year!

Proud of the lads. Hope Inter win.

We need a player like this.. our winger(to be bought) has to be a player like this. Fast, Direct, commits players.

In hindsight, should just have rested players on the weeeknd to give us legs for today.

I think PSG score another after 70..

Yeah, he’s the long-suffering younger bro, heart of gold, but a no-nonsense, ex-boxing pro now coaching young boxers, who can’t kick me on to the streets but does not like my negative attitude! It’s not ideal, but he’s cool. We both know I need to get out urgently, because this town more than anything is sapping my will to live! Farnham is just a blue-rinse Tory town. I’m gonna sound like a city snob, there’s some nice people but it’s so fucking boooooorrrrrrriinnnnng! I’ve lived in London, Glastonbury, Bristol and Bath AND I had a car so when I was here spending time with my mum in her later years, I could just jump in a car and drive off. But right now I have to walk half an hour to town or to the station. I just need a new environment.

Nowhere more apparent than when the Democrats put out a lengthy list of every policy directive they pushed through in their last term while Trump just said “they’re all crooked and they hate you, I can make you great again.” One’s factually true, one’s a lie, guess which one connects?

And tbh, I really don’t give a fuck what the Democrats have done. They funded a genocide, they escalated a war with Russia and the American people continued to suffer while corporations continued to rake in record profits. The only person who has connected that viscerally with the working class was Luigi Mangione. And I have big issues with cold-blooded murder no matter the moral case many working class on the left make about it. But I do understand why he connected so viscerally with the masses.

He’s not interested in looking statesmanslike or being factual. He’s got pretty far with neither. He just says whatever bullshit comes up in his head. And enough people take it seriously because he’s appealing to something far more primal that the centre and centre-left relinquished dealing with years ago, our collective sense that everything’s fucked and the masses are made to suffer. And yes he’s part of that. It’s the Berlusconi template, the pied piper archetype. And the centre-left are still stumped and offering fact-checking as an alternative to the sense of existential alienation. Now that’s lame!

Not wanting to give the oaf any credit, but it wouldn’t be the first time a football match has ended a war (Biafran war, 67-70). It’s also responsible for starting wars (El Salvador v Nicaragua) so that cancels it out. I wish it wasn’t just rightwing nutjobs who were intent on ending the demonisation of other nations through the medium of sport and common cultures. Not saying he or Putin, or Infantino are anything other than dodgy, but why has it become that if they say something it’s automatically rejected cos of who they are?

Looking at that Laurel and Hardy defending last night, this is a once-in-a-generation chance to win this thing, yes let's make it happen by not showing them as much respect as we did last week.
Heh! Another sobering perspective! Yes, there were some howlers from both sides too. But their abilities to capitalise and deliver a sequence of passes into space without hesitation is what the likes of Martinelli and Ødegaard have been failing to do time and again. Both over-delay, especially this season. And the chance has gone. Both need to do better.
northbankfc @ 08:10 | May 7, 2025
The standard of defending and midfield and forward passing from both sides was exceptional. They both threw caution to the wind. Sommer was out of this world with that last-minute save from Yamal.

We have defenders to match anyone. Our present first-choice central midfielders (Rice and Partey) can match anyone as well. Saka is up there. But I’m sorry, I don’t think our forward passing matches the slickness and awareness of both Inter and Barca. Shearer totally missed it last night, but Frattesi’s classy finish was not possible a second before. He feinted a shot to open space. That level of play is what every midfielder and attacker should have as standard at this level.

Having said all that, I’m happy to go through with two goals going in off Merino’s arse! Our classier forward line can wait until next season. Tonight we must win.
