I think many live events, concerts and theatrical performances pay their respects to a significant loss. The question I have, is why was it the douer mourning variety of a moment's silence after firing up 60,000 fans to show their respect rather than the more positive life celebration version and the minute of applause? I not Catholic, but by all accounts he seemed like a good chap, so why not send him off with celebration rather than the bubble bursting silence. Anyway, it didn't seem to bother the PSG players very much, or their raucous fans. I think it's more of an excuse than anything. Quit sad really.

I have no problem with it for a well regarded figure at your club or in the greater football world (100 cap internationals, 50 year managers, world cup winners and the like) or a world/national figure, the pope/the queen. At a lot of our gigs, particularly "arts & culture" (like philharmonic) and shows at certain venues they do a whole reconciliation spiel ("we acknowledge we are on the lands of... " etc etc). I can understand the reasons for it (our ancestors did take their lands, after all) but it's incessant and while it perhaps had the intended impact when they first started doing it now you can see the crowd going into "ugh, this again" mode.

It’s the biggest indication of how institutions uphold a system. Like the poppy commemorations, they are indicative of how representatives of the status quo mutually reinforce the gravity of other representatives. Royalty, state leaders, even corporate figures who attain a certain caché are all commemorated. And to protest in any way is to somehow desecrate the atmosphere of reverence. With Pope Francis, he seemed to be on the side of the good regardless of the institution he represented. I feel the crowd gave him some leeway with the fans.

The more to it was they were not at the level required. Saliba, Partey and yes even Ødegaard have all reached sublime levels, where you know they’re on the next level (with Ødegaard it’s still moot, but he has scored and assisted and had games where he has dominated - against smaller teams has to be said). But ESR showed promise but didn’t hit those heights and his time at Fulham has kind of underlined that. Fans do get attached to players. With Ødegaard I can see why, and with ESR I know those early performances, the way he ran with the ball, but he didn’t push on and, as with Ødegaard, the injuries and being out of the team were used as reasons why but in the end Arteta had seen enough. It would be surprising if Arteta ditched Ødegaard based on half a poor season. But another season like that and there would be a case. In any case, another No 10 who can double as a central midfielder or even a winger but has that X Factor is badly needed. Ødegaard alone is making us just a little too predictable.

I’m in Islington today. Popped down to see if I could get temporary housing here. Claiming a connection to the area, all 46 years of it. Took a stroll to the stadium, paid my respects to Herbert Chapman. Stopped off the Italian restaurant on Holloway Rd to have an espresso and crodino, enjoying the spring sun, bumping into old friends as I cross the road. Am I just being sentimental, this connection to the place. People often leave where they were raised and never want to go back. But when the place you were raised was N5, it’s kinda hard to come back and still feel so connected and to recognise that it doesn’t mean you have any right to return.

Anyway, a distraction from the inquest into our CL performance and chances next week.

He was up for Premier League player of the month in November…

Odegaard returned from injury in November and immediately transformed Arsenal, scoring or assisting in all three of his appearances. In his first league match since August, the Norwegian set up Arsenal's goal in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea, before getting another assist in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest and ending the month with a goal in a 5-2 victory at West Ham United. He created 11 chances, the second-most among Premier League players in November.

My point was that since illness in December it doesn’t look like he’s fully recovered. Havertz also was off for a while. Lack of quality cover has probably meant that recovery has not been possible and his performances have absolutely suffered.

Opposite for me. Inter will do what they did against us earlier in the season...sit back and force us to find a way through. We'll have the same problems we did then and that we do when teams play that way against us in the PL.
Barca at least plays an open game which suits us much better.

It's absolutely fine to say that too and nobody should be gaslighting anyone for saying it. Obviously, nobody should be getting personal about it and calling him shit but there is also no reason to lump genuine criticism in with the dick heads doing that either.

I honestly think we should be looking at his place in the team as one we need a player who can give us 25 goals/assists if we want to win the big stuff but I wouldn't begin to thinking about selling him. He can get 25 goals/assists next season, he's more than capable of it.

I'm not sure if i've missed this, but surely one of the biggest issues we faced in the PSG match was that one missing player meant 3 players playng out of position. There was talk , here on this blog, that maybe Ben White come in for Partey, seeing that he has defensive and attacking capabilities. Sure, we've not played him in midfield this season (or ever) but he's a talented player. That would mean the risk was 1 player not playing in their strongest position.
Instead we moved Rice and Merino out of their strongest positions and brought in Trossard who hasn't previously worked as a striker. I think those changes played a lot in to the start that we had .
Odeguard struggled but these changes would impact his playing too.

Ødegaard has got better and better for us up until the start of this season. He was as in form as any of our players this season until his injury. I think people forget how good he was when he came back from that injury. Pundits purring that he made the whole team tick and Arteta talking about how exceptional he was to be able to come straight back at such a high level….

It was the illness at Christmas that did for him. He had not been himself since then, he has not even looked well since then. Sometimes two plus two is four.

Whilst we should have more cover, he’s obviously not going to refuse to play. He is still leading the press, still asking for the ball. He’s just 10% off in all aspects of his game, That might still be better than an available alternative, maybe not.

Support the captain, cross your fingers for a full recovery back to the frankly incredible player he has consistently shown himself to be pre illness, but let’s also sign or use quality creative alternatives as a priority.

Isak has repeatedly said he doesn't want to come here why on earth do you think he'd change his mind.
i am fully aware that Isak has no desire to play for the Arsenal...

...i was just hypothesize-ing what it would have taken for us to win the CL this year.

sorry guys but we ain't winning the CL this year but that isn't all Ødegårds fault.

we have a :-

weakened Defence - Gabriel

weakened Midfield - MØ's form

weakened Attack - makeshift CF

weak Squad depth - no elite striker, no top quality backup players

None of the other Semifinalists have this level of problems

IF we had none of the above problems and Isak then we almost certainly would win it.

Bizarrely, about half an hour ago I came across the plastic bag we had to hold up over our heads pre-match when we played Barca at our gaff on Feb 23 2016 and lost.

Arse.

I found myself dooming down into the sofa, muttering "how tf will we beat one of these two in the final??" which led directly into considering the pain may be less to go out to PSG than to lose a final. Paris 06 still causes me pain to think about :/

Well balanced Blogs
I was one of the "crowd" people actus reus there but admit not ever being happy until full Turkiye levels of..."conniption" are attained.
The Equestrian Centre, Ecstasy Airport and Sunrise et al have got a lot to answer for ;p
Beautiful word tho. And Paris is beautiful in the spring.

Either the anger is fake, in which case it's just performative and narcissistic, or it's real, in which case we are heading for an epidemic of aneurysms.

Until we get over the line in either the league or the CL, I don't think things will change much.
Once we finally do it maybe the fans will relax a bit...or not, who knows.

Surely they will need to contain all the threat from that side. When Saka plays there are 3 on him. Yesterday that kid was on fire but Inter chose to not load that side.

If the depth issue isn't properly resolved this summer, we're going to have similar issues with lack of numbers/tactical options next season. That will mean a minimum of two attacking signings and a #8 with some actual pace and passing range. I love Rice but I don't think he's that guy going forward. Let a natural #6 be just that.

Me on arseblog news when I heard we had loaned Fábio Vieira back to Portugal.

'Not a Fábio Vieira fan but we are culling our squad within an inch of its life yet again. 6 midfielders including Nwaneri? Need another forward AND midfielder now'.

Sterling on transfer deadline day. Cannot afford another debacle like that.
kleinfeld @ 08:42 | May 1, 2025
Agree on the arm waving at the crowd.

Instead, let's see some goals from the players - and since Arteta does it too, how about making a sub that isn't a right back for a right back

Takes too many touches
Slows our whole game down

One of the long-standing issues I have with Ødegaard is that he doesn’t rise to the big occasion quite enough (the other main issue being his lack of physicality). He definitely has credit in the bank...
Well in doon.

Same here. Not many in the team that brings in the elite performances in big pressure crucial matches.
Saka, Rice, Raya for example lift their game.

Still Odegaard has much to offer. Hope he comes good.
iclass @ 08:01 | May 1, 2025
Nice balance to the blog.
I found myself thinking on Thursday night whether or not the comments that Odegaard should fuck off and never come back would be used if a kid of theirs had several poor games in a weekend league…..” you’re shit son. Fuck off and don’t come home. You were good last season but now your mum and me don’t ever want to see you again “

I think that's what this season really boils down to, the lack of competition in attacking positions. One of the reason Liverpool won the league is because they had healthy competition all across the front line and midfield. And then you look at who PSG could bring on..

My only criticism of Ødegaard would be his call to go "Full Gas" in the 2nd Leg - Bristol Rovers' relegation from League 1 was confirmed on Tuesday night having picked up just 1 point from the last 27; Now is not the time, Martin, to go "the Full Gas"!

Still love the fact despite his form he is not hiding - he is everywhere on the pitch, always looking for the ball. He'll come through it
s.p2 @ 07:50 | May 1, 2025
Weather in Dublin has been amazing. I can say the same about Central Europe. Don’t need any motivation to be active in this glorious heat.
lukas @ 07:46 | May 1, 2025
Nice blog, Blogs. My take on the whole thing is that I love and support all of our players, with the caveat that some of them aren't good enough if we want to compete with the very best. Improvements need to be made in the summer and even though Tuesday night really hurt I'll be fully behind all the players next week in the hope they can have the game of their lives.

A fair blog, Blogs. As 'the team' keep reminding us 'it's only half time'.
I think the media fellas have been waiting to knock Arsenal down despite our fantastic CL performances and this defeat has given them the chance.
The first half hour or so of the game was demoralising and following Arseblog Live I was expecting a bad defeat, but the team rallied and despite some unusual poor individual performances didn't concede another goal.
Credit where credit is due I say!

Re: Odegaard, nicely put & a lot more articulate than my comments yesterday. Now that the dust has settled, the reality is we're only a goal down so time for them ALL (including Ode) to stand up & be counted next week. Still have faith we can turn it around
