I didn;t say he always makes mistakes leading to goals. I said we are weakend - which means less solidity, which means pressure on an already weakend midfield (because he's not there), which means even less fluency and coherence in attack.

I mean, this has been noticed by many people. Note again, I am not blaming Partey. Even the reporter asked him about Thomas at RB today.

Who says this correlation and not causation? We clearly play worse when he’s at RB. This is not TP’s fault and no one is blaming him. But if you watched the matches, two things would immediately be clear. First, we lose his creativity and all around passing ability in the center. We become very slow and predictable. Secondly, we are weakened at RB and his positioning and defensive weakness is exposed. He’s not a RB.

So we have a weakened defence and a weak end midfield + an already crippled attack.

It’s been a bit unfair on Partey too. He has the capability to do a fantastic job in midfield, and hasn’t been able to show that for weeks while he’s been put at rb. I imagine it’s frustrating.

probably not an option in Arteta's eyes for the same reason Kiwior isn't... he's a leftie.

I don't disagree though, like earlier in the season when Arteta had Partey at right back because he said he didn't have another option with Timber at left back... but he had a number of options for left back, he didn't have to use Timber there.

This number is the symbol of the new method of identification and payment which everyone will be forced to adopt if they want to be able to move freely, trade etc. it’s not that much of a stretch to see how it could be implemented. A digital, biometric ‘sign’ by which your data and money can be accessed, like a chip under the skin or something.

However I always thought ‘but no one is actually going to use the literally number of the beast from the bible, are they?’

Yep, and i think Havertz has turned most around on his signing, been a positive generally and frankly with such a shambles in terms of striker recruitment ("But we would have bought a striker if we'd not signed him"...would we?) he's kept us above water with his performances as a striker...but theres no doubt he was bought to play in midfield and as a striker plays more as a goalscoring 10.

At this stage we arguably don't have a single 'striker' in the squad, and don't seem to have anything on the edge of the first team in that area. You can't really expect to live like that medium to long term, waiting for some sort of striking unicorn to become available.

To be fair, he'd immediately be our best striker too, massive potential. Unquestionably risky but nothing ventured etc.

You are right, plenty of players out there who'd improve our team , plenty who'd massively improve our squad. We tried the goldilocks method the previous decade, did not go well.

Just someone who gives something down the middle would be a start

Pretty sure I saw on sky last night than Arsenal are 2nd bottom in goals scored through the middle with 22% with only Fulham behind

Which when you actually sit down and think of this stat it is unbelievable

How is still bloody -1°C? It was supposed to be +2 or 3 by then.
Anyway, still off for what is officially the 'final' run of my rehab (only just 30 min, mind).
Then I'm ready for Friday's indoor footie and just see how my body reacts to that....

As usual, the still brilliant Jonathan Pie summed up the clusterfuck we are in perfectly yesterday afternoon. We are dividing into something approaching two separate human species before our eyes, the 1% with 99% of the wealth, and now actual power versus the rest.

What I feel, without having dived into statistical analysis because I'm too lazy, is that we are conceding far more often from what is still not a great number of overall Big Chances given up. So defensively underperforming our reverse XG, or something.

One thing I have been concerned about for some weeks is that because we are far from ruthless up front this season, we are overcommitting bodies high up the field and therefore open to a fast counter, and not even always out wide. The sight of an opponent just roaring up the guts of our CM while defenders back off until the edge of our box has been giving me palpitations.

I think we had that fearlessness in the first truly competitive season, 2022/23. Maybe it's not sustainable? Maybe taking everyone by surprise only works for 6 months as it did for us then. I think Forest and Bournemouth have to sustain this form and performance for longer before we need to cast envious eyes at them.

I do agree, although it doesn’t stop me being envious of some of the fearless football clubs such as Bournemouth and Forest are playing at the moment. I feel like with the quality we have a little less caution would see us win more games. I definitely don’t want a new manager though.

Spoke about this on the pod – I put that on the player. Just go for it. I don't believe he's told 'In this situation, head back towards your own goal'.

Does Arteta get everything out of this group, have some switched off/checked out?

There was an example early in the 2nd half, Martinelli broke away on his own, he ran he stopped, he checked back, eventually he passed back and we lost momentum. This could be just Martinelli but I do get that feeling players are so risk adverse now it’s become a hinderance

That isn’t the Martinelli who burst onto the scene, I just wonder has MA’s control of every element turned players off and made them scared not to play their natural game and instead play the game he wants them to play

Look at how the women’s team moved on from losing and underperforming week in week out with a demanding manager mentally to a new manager and the subsequent freedom to play their game

Which leads me to Iraola at Bournemouth playing an expansive game to everyone’s strengths, just a thought he could be the natural successor if and when MA moves on, because the pressure will be on come the summer
lukas @ 08:55 | Jan 21, 2025
I think I’d rather try a back three or something than play Partey at right back. Timber, Gabriel and Tierney.

My position is delightfully simple: Had we avoided Partey at RB, we'd won against Villa.
Partey is not the greatest player... And especially not on RB. Not his fault he gets played there. But there's as many as two players who can do en excellent job on their way back for the position...

Tomiyasu had 1654 minutes last season, more than Kiwior, Nketiah, Partey, Nelson, Smith Rowe and Vieira
Four of those listed were squad filler and are now gone. Kiwior is most definitely a backup, only Partey is comparable. Tomiyasu also missed 13 games through injury last season in two spells, according to Transfermarkt. His injury struggles were eminently foreseeable.

Morning all.

You're always going to get little injuries such as Saliba's, but Zinchenko, Jesus and Tomiyasu's injury problems have been going on a while now while Calafiori had an injury history before we bought him. It's not like at least some of it couldn't have been forseen.

White and Saka have just been run into the ground.
