Slot must be thinking that all the hype around the PL is just that, hype.

The title race is looking like a race between Usain Bolt (Liverpool), Peter Kay (Arsenal), Johnny Vegas (Man City) all closely followed by Les Dawson and The Roly Polys.

Pitch black I couldn’t see a thing. Then, somewhere I had a flashing image. The bottom is actually a 3ft drop onto the road. Some how I lifted the front wheel and flew of this drop, the bike saddle left my bum and the bike was vertical in the air. I landed the fucker, rushing like a pro gurner, and shouted Evil Kernevil have you got yourself some competition. Ala Cannonball Run.

The best part about Highbury was the East Stand.

It went house, house, house, house, East Stand entrance, house, house, house! 🤣
In the January of 1997 I worked at a golf course as a fresh faced 16 year old, one of the green keepers was an Arsenal fan, he said did I ever go to games and I said not really but I would love too, he suggested I wrote to Arsenal and asked for a season ticket

A few months later I got a letter back asking me to go to the stadium to look at available seats, I walked round to the marble halls and knocked on the door - they let me in and man came from reception

I said I was here to look at seats, he seemed surprised in a way albeit my letter had a time and date he said ok let’s have a look and proceeded to show me through the door which joined the players tunnel and we went out onto the pitch

He said we’ve got seats here, here and proceeded to point and the first one was row 18 more or less directly behind the Arsenal subs bench - we walked up and he encouraged me to sit down and have a look out onto the empty pitch

I said yes this is good, he said well the prices have just gone up, it’s £364 but I’ll also get 7/8 cup vouchers, I said thats fine and we went back up the players tunnel and I paid in full and a few weeks later the season ticket arrived in the post

Honestly, I loved Highbury, I had been to a few games previously but having the season ticket and having such a great seat in the East Stand is something I’ll always cherish especially winning the league in my first season 97/98, watching Ian Wright dance naked at the dressing room window when he broke the scoring record, Anelka’s ability, Bergkamp’s genius, Ljungberg’s debut - some amazing memories but this personal experience is long gone now in a time where tickets are bought online etc and our stadium is great, but far from unique in many ways

Anyway just thought I’d share a Highbury story

heh, that seems like a terrible idea. If you watch VI first you'll know that anyone who is in it must survive the first three and most likely anyone not in it bites the dust, which would destroy all the suspense of watching the earlier films.

I think I've only seen the first one and I recall it very clearly because it's still the example we use when talking spoilers. Half way through the person I was watching it with unintentionally said something (which I won't utter here) that pretty much blew the big reveal. 😂😬

speaking of pedestrians, some of them have the same lack of self-preservation. I'm astonished how often I'm walking behind someone with earphones who reaches a street crossing and just goes without looking in any direction at all to see if there's a large metal body-masher coming. If you step on the road and happen to get in the way of a distracted driver right then... 😬 you're asphalt fodder, buddy.

From a driver perspective there are only two types of cyclists who annoy me. The ones with zero sense of self-preservation like the guy who suddenly bolts across four lanes of traffic without even a glance sending cars behind them into a brakey crashy clusterfuck (a mirror would've come in handy there!), and the ones who ride on the road when there is a perfectly good parallel bike path just 10 feet from where they're riding. Taxpayers spent a lot of their hard-earned money for you to have a nice path to use, so bloody well use it! rant over. 😂

Why are we playing New Year's Day? Would rather have played tonight and get it out the way. At least it starts at 5.30 - the family will have gone by then. Might watch a movie upstairs for 2 hours.

New Year better mean "Brentford 1 Arsenal 3"

(However, if it's 1 - 2 with ten minutes to go, then I think I'll have a stroke or something)

The title may have gone, but we're still in with a shout for both the Carabao and the FA Cup.

Any longish run in the CL would do for me too!

East Stand was Avenell Road and the Marble Halls. West Stand was Highbury Hill which was all the houses that Arsenal wanted to get compulsory purchase orders to knock down to extend capacity.

Didn’t happen because of the residents association that formed. It’s still weird seeing the garden space which they thankfully kept where all that history was made. Just nostalgia on top of nostalgia!

I know I said I wouldn't come and comment here again.. but today's Blog post chimed with me and my own experiences.

I took a holiday to the Dublin area with a friend's family when I was about 14 or 15. My friend and I rented a couple of bikes for a few days and really got about the place. We used to cycle in to Dublin to go to the arcade to play Street Fighter II when it first came out, and I distinctly remember one moment when we must have been coming down some hill or another, pretty fast, and there was an articulated lorry right behind us. If I had skidded or fallen at that moment I would have been dog food. The arcades were fun, with young Irish lads with skinheads stubbing cigarettes out on each others' heads. for laughs. The house we were renting was by the shore, and I went down there and picked a couple of mussels off the rocks to cook up. I found a tiny pearl in one of them. I didn't particularly enjoy the holiday due to the other family which had come with us - the dad, the only man there, was a bit of a bully. I remember him slamming his hand down loudly onto the kitchen table during a meal time because I laughed at a silly joke my friend had made, about Blanka of all things. As a 44-year-old man myself now, I know there was no need for that.
--------------
In other thoughts, Andrew what do you know of the island of Bere? Have you visited it? I noticed that the Irish government is looking for people to help maintain populations on certain islands along Ireland's west coast, and Bere is one of them. They're offering generous grants for people to renovate old houses. I half considered coming, finding a lovely place to live and maybe opening a sushi place 4 nights a week or whatever in the town. I have my Irish passport now (thanks Granny Mills from Dublin), so am technically an Irishman myself.

I know people, proper environmental campaigners, who attend these summits. They often come away feeling quite enthused while recognising how immense the task is to get every country, often with vastly different needs and priorities, to agree on a course of action. Inevitably the richest countries hold sway, but resource-rich countries are gaining influence.

Video calls can only take you so far, there’s nothing comparable to face to face meetings. I’m trying not to be too cynical because it’s easy to just say it’s all a corporate jolly and we’re fucked anyway so it’s a waste of time. There’s a big sense in me of disillusionment (which our football fortunes is not helping to dissipate!) but Brazil is a key player with Lula Da Silva at least recognising eco responsibility.

But with “drill baby drill” as US president, I guess it’s a drop in the ocean. This world is getting crazier and that’s another stock “old man” phrase. Got to be another way to see this all.

Went and visited the old house in Highbury yesterday. Driving around those north London streets with their 20 mph limits and multiple cameras we reminisced how we used to tear down some of those roads in our cars to beat the lights, could pop down side alleys for short cuts, park in most places. And we rode our bikes around there too, somehow we all managed. The hard part about getting old is the comparison with the past which, if you’re lucky, always has good memories hard to repeat. The old Arsenal curiosity shop by the Clock End with the old man selling one type of replica shirt, the home kit made of polyester which was nothing like the real thing, just the away kit from the 71 cup final looked authentic. But it makes today’s multimillion pound clothing corporation, The Armoury et al look like behemoths by comparison. Times change, looking back is inevitable, but it’s always tinged (for me anyway) with a bit of sadness.

There does seem to be a number of militant cyclists out there, which I am not, who feel as though everyone: walker or driver, owes them the world cause they cycle🤷‍♂️.

In London the bicycles not withstanding the multitudes of bike lanes still like to use the pavements - especially to cut off corners at lights -and their bike parking is abysmal. They have the same right of way as pedestrians crossing side roads at junctions - not a lot of car drivers know this - new in the Highway code in the last year or so - but they still don't give way to pedestrians who are as sail to steam IMV. The worst things are the bike lanes that run behind the bus stops in Whitechapel where pedestrians have to dice with death to catch a bus leaping from the pavement across the bike lane ....right near the hospital where taxis aren't allowed to drop off....rant over. As you were.
