To be fair he was up against some ridiculously quick wingers in this one. PSG have some serious speed in their ranks.

" a candidate for... possble PKs whick Zinny was not "
well yeah, but that's because Zinny gets left in the dust long before the attacker gets to the penalty box. 😏

philmar @ 14:27 | Oct 2, 2024
Calafiori struggles against wingers with quick acceleration. He is not as quick and mobile so he can be beaten from a standing start. He is fast once he gets going but initial acceleration is not elite. Good news is that if the defender and winger need to be in a starting position for Calafiori to be beat, that gives Big Gabby time to set and be focused on protecting that flank much like he did countless time Zinny was playing there. Gabby couldn't compensate for Zinny's positioning on long balls/passes to Zinny's position but Calafiori needs no help for those. Calafiori does have a tendency to push players that beat him and he needs to iron that out when it occurs in the box. He seems to be a candidate for multiple yellow cards and possble PKs whick Zinny was not. Zinny could get beat but there was still Raya or Gabby to save him. I just hope Calafiori doesn't gift a penalty in situations where a teammate could have still stopped the threat. I think Dembele not playing was huge for PSG.

I think at half time Luiz Enrique read their team the riot act. They came out with real intent in the second half but got very little joy out of our brick wall of a defensive line. Our boys did well. Brava!

in a football world which is increasingly based on robust systems and seeing a huge decline in players playing off the cuff and attacking mavericks disappear from the sport, i really appreciate how rogue he is.

you're probably right in that his style will likely lead to some costly mistakes but he's a bit of a throw back which i am enjoying.

Until you get that "put away" goal though MG, or at least leaven the defending with a bit more at the other end, it can still feel fragile. We ultmately came back well against the Foxes but for a period (after their worldie true) we were all over the place.

Zinchenko is the classic case of "accident waiting to happen" in our squad in my opinion. Calafiori, even with his faults and weak areas is quite an upgrade on Zinny and I'm glad we have Timber who can play at either full back positions too.

Calafiori is a good player but he is an accident waiting to happen, at times careless on the ball in positions that could cause us trouble. I’m hoping this gets coached out of him because if it is then we will have an exceedingly good player in our squad

I trace it back to the feisty Newcassle away game, they were trying to bully us and he flew into that beautiful wild tackle on Longstaff (or one of their other no-names) and they screamed for a red card. He refused to be pushed around on that day, and has put himself about with a totally different level of physicality ever since. Now he challenges for every ball, every time, fairly or foul-ly. No way he was scoring last night's header in his first months at the club when he was more a skittish fawn than the rampaging bull he is blossomed into. Just superb.
