that's what I mean. It's as if just touching the ball when it's not in play is a capital offense now (well, for us, anyway) regardless of the context.

"And they’ve clearly ignored the rule about who is allowed to talk to the ref"
I was cringing when Trossard got sent off and we had about 8 players surrounding the ref and I'm thinking "😬 back off, guys!! This ref just sent off our player for very little, if we keep this up he'll send off half our team just because he can"

Even at the time they couldn’t make up their mind about which reason he was sent off for. One moment it was violent conduct for the foul, second was delaying the restart. If it was anything, it should have been petulance for kicking the ball away (that is clearly different to delaying). But if we’re going with petulance and unsportsmanlike behaviour then Haaland shouldn’t have been on the pitch at the end.

And they’ve clearly ignored the rule about who is allowed to talk to the ref, just five games into the season.

Even though that SHOULD be a factor, it seems like it isn't. Rice touched the ball barely a yard and it was still rolling at the time. That hardly delayed any time at all. the boot to his leg, on the other hard, delayed things significantly.

It's the challenge as well as the kick. It's the over-excited energy in both. I can understand why. After Gabriel's goal City were riled and stepped up the fouling. The heat was rising second to second. Players want to match that and the shorter players feel they need to exert more energy to win the challenges. But he needed to be calmer. We were in control. He lost his head and he gave Oliver a reason. We have to let it go. Not angry, it was deeply unfortunate, but the team collectively has to rise higher, our opponents will get dirtier. We musn't lose our cool. We have more than enough physicality in the team to handle any team. How long I've waited to say that!

very good point.

I think it was red card bias, if that's what you want to call it. I mentioned something similar the other day (albeit in very different context) where if you expect to see something you WILL see it because you're looking for it. we were a man down against a relentless attack. You expect to see a team in that position running down the clock so you notice it more than you normally would in a game that's flowing. I think if you showed that stat to Oliver he would be very surprised.
northbankfc @ 21:08 | Sep 23, 2024
I wanna say humble respect to Martinelli as well, he was immense defensively, and his assist for Calafiori's stunner of a curler was also great. We need his goals, we need him taking charge, we need him to make the difference up front. We need it now.

If you look at the general direction he booted the ball in, had the free kick not been given, he could have put Martinelli clean through, but of course it would have been along the ground. He had his back to the referee, and it's possible he thought it was the half-time whistle, the added minutes had already been exceeded.

As for preventing the restart, wasn't the C115eh player he fouled on the floor so they couldn't have taken the free kick anyway at that moment?

Both Barry Glendinning and Barney Ronay manage to write mockingly and disparagingly about Arsenal fans being conspiratorial about the Trossard yellow while both fail to mention Doku failing to get a yellow for his kicking the ball away. I'll say again, Trossard was stupid to be that aggressive in the collision with the City player and regardless of hearing the whistle or not his kick away was petulant. Our anger at Oliver's clear bias shouldn't blind us to Trossard's foolishness. Our defence is immaculate, our attack needs to sharpen up.

This would warrant very little extra time certainly not 7 minutes wich would be 4-5 minutes more than the average games .. So where did they find this time.. it’s obviously not scientific I certainly trust Opta more than some Mancunian ref winging it .. Where did they find the time .. who ordered it what’s the process. Explain that to me Howard ..This is how you catch foul play but nobody will look .

as has been said many times, the new insistence on yellow carding time-wasting is totally unnecessary (unless there are repeat incidences in a game... looking at you Emi!) when added time can already compensate for it, but if they really insist on it then at least allow referees latitude to warn players first (like they do with other things like persistent fouling)

As I said earlier, I believe there is a northern bias in English football: both Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Leeds years ago, and now Newcastle and their deeply cynical and violent style of play.

Also, most of the refs come from the north of England. That's where the bias is and why English football is obsessed with the petty minutia of the game and not the real issues of violence and dangerous play.

Well in a way I'm glad the gloves are off now.

We can just stop with the faux respect for how great this City team has been and the gold standard that they've set due to absolute financial doping at best and blatant corruption at worst.

They don't like us so we can stop with the phoniness and say we don't like or respect them. Also I love how Jesus came to the defense of his manager after that Haaland comment. If we could use the anger from this injustice and channel it in the right way then having been conned out of a famous win at the Etihad may have been worth it.

Now, it’s the reality that if Arteta who everyone has ridiculed (Neville and media) as light pep were to win the league (with Man City’s riches and cheating) they would have to ask questions of themselves. Right now, they console themselves that only a great manager like Klopp could have done it.

I understood the refs bias when it was British Fergie vs Foreigner Wenger. Right now, I don’t quite get it. Either there’s a significant amount of referees who are just biased or something else. It is really difficult to explain. Mike Riley was on Sky a couple of weeks ago contradicting himself on letter of the law/no choice vs common sense/benefit of the doubt.

Arsenal never seem to be on the receiving end of the latter.

have the club announced anything yet? The Arses have ranged from "season over" to "injury not too bad"
From The Athletic :

Rodri is set to be ruled out for a significant period of time after suffering a serious knee injury in the Premier League draw with Arsenal and there are fears he may not return this season.

The Manchester City midfielder went down clutching his right knee and was forced off after 21 minutes at the Etihad Stadium. He stumbled and fell after making a front-post run at a corner while being marshalled by Thomas Partey.

He immediately appeared in pain and a number of his team-mates quickly gestured for him to receive medical attention.

Rodri walked off the pitch accompanied by two members of the City medical staff and was replaced by Mateo Kovacic.

Tests have confirmed the severity of the injury, and while further examinations will take place in Spain, there is still no official timeline for his recovery. However, sources close to the player have suggested he may be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign.

Without him City went behind before fighting back to earn a 2-2 draw to return to the top of the Premier League.

Rodri injury may be the most significant moment for Man City in a match of a million things

Sunday’s fixture was Rodri’s first start of the season as Pep Guardiola eased him back into action following his involvement in the summer’s European Championship.

The 28-year-old was replaced at half time during Spain’s victory over England int the final due to a hamstring injury and only returned to training the Wednesday before the Premier League season kicked off.

On Tuesday, Rodri said professional players are “close” to going on strike due to the increasing number of matches in the football calendar.

The Spain international played 4,327 minutes across 50 games for his club last season and faces the prospect of an 11-month long campaign in 2024-25 if City reach the final of the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup, which is scheduled for July 13 next year.

Asked if there was a possibility of players going on strike over the soaring number of matches, Rodri said: “Yes, I think we are close to that. If it keeps this way we will have no other option. It is something that worries us.”

A recent FIFPro report on player welfare concluded that the 2024-25 season is set to be the “worst” in terms of workload.

“Between 40 and 50 is the amount of games in which a player can perform at the highest level,” Rodri added. “After that you drop because it is impossible to sustain the physical level. This year we are maybe going to go until 70 or maybe 80. In my humble opinion, I think it is too much.

“Someone has to take care of us because we are the main characters of this, let’s say, sport, or business, whatever you want to call it.

“Not everything is about money or marketing. It is about the quality of the show. In my opinion, when I am not tired I perform better. If people want to see better football then we need to rest.”

City are next in action against Watford in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening. Their next Premier League fixture comes away at Newcastle United on Saturday.

Re stoppage time; surely this is for TV so they can stretch the games out to 2 to 2 1/2 hours to fit US scheduling. Games that used to kick off at 3pm were over by 4.45 at the latest, now it's more common for a 5pm finish. The Sunday and weekday games are sometimes even longer than that.

Well, imagine being Haaland who can clatter into a defender (fair enough, Lemmy of Mouse and Men, you don't know your strength), afterwards push another defender - and go scott free.
And then, when a goal is scored, freely toss the ball at another defender, standing with their back to you.

Knowing you can get away with anything must do wonders to your confidence...

"That’s what added time is for."
This is what gets me. They ARE adding extra time for time wasting already. What used to 2 minutes is now 9, so by also doing the yellows to immediately send people off they're effectively double-taxing players.

And even if they really want to yellow card players at least give a warning first like they do with goalkeepers who waste time or players who persistently foul ("that's three of those, stop it or one more and you're in the book"). Somehow the "letter of the law" merchants aren't mentioning that sort of thing.

The refs are mostly white northern men, and so are the so-called pundits who are about as neutral as the ones who work in professional wrestling. They are there to promote the product for which the broadcasters have paid billions. So everything has to be hyped to the nth degree, and everything has to be controversial, and they have to defend the refs, who are also part of the product.

It's all very incestuous.

I agree the way Neville has been piling on the praise for us is a bit suspect. They're all genuinely worried now. I can't think of Walker without laughing at his childish and pointless poking of Gabriel like it would make a difference and then Gabi baiting and switching to leap for the goal. Absolutely superb and left him with egg on that dopey face. We were in prime position they were totally rattled then Oliver had to make that call way over stoppage time. Still mad that Tross got caught up in the heat of the moment but we are where we are, unbeaten, now three games we have to dispatch with professionalism before that hard run of games starting with Liverpool. Just want Ødegaard back by the or Nwaneri having stepped up.

Not enough being said about each player. Timber was immense in a new role. Obviously the CBs and Cali. But fair play also to Partey, he made a couple of mistakes, I worried he was on a yellow but he took up good positions screening that defence and was always ready with a challenge. Kind of like the way United fans started the "same old Arsenal always cheating" chant to deflect from their nasty, cheating team in their heyday. From the moment Rodri went down like he's been poleaxed by steel girder I knew what City's tactics were gonna be. They chose to do what Pep's Barca did in their day, look for every cynical action. And yeah sure this team can match them in the dark arts if need be, but it's not as cynical. And they'll say it's bias, but we know the truth.

The "analysis" of the Doku kick away on MOTD2 was ridiculous. Are expected to believe that an experienced international footballer accidentally kicked the ball 10 yards past where the free-kick was obviously given and eventually taken from rather than rolling it 5 yards to the kicker?

If you believe that then I've got a bridge to sell you.

It started with Wenger. The xenophobic stuff of "foreigners" coming over ere and changing our drinking culture. It's the Malcolm Allison mentality of calling the "continentals" peasants for playing with a sweeper. It's the officials overwhelmingly coming from the north with an anti-London bias and as we're the biggest London club, an extra bias there. Chelsea didn't get it but then they had Oligarch money no doubt lining the coffers of unnamed officials. Everyone is so afraid of calling it corruption. Incompetence is such a bullshit word, these are trained professionals no matter the label of "amateur". They know what they're doing and as we' e said so many times before it's the lack of accountability, the lack of consistency, the convenient, retro-fitted explanations for the decisions. The Doku blatant kick away brushed off with a "kicking it in the direction of the free kick". It's the way they pundits love to gang up against us. They genuinely have an issue with our support, with the fans. It's jealousy, we are the one club in the south that has succeeded without bent money. And are fans are vocal, and honest. I'm sure there are more reasons, but that's a fair bit to be getting on with. They want to stop us for what Blog said this morning. City winning means nothing cos of the money, like Chelsea winning. But us winning MEANS SOMETHING. They are terrified we'll win the league and that our fans will never stop going on about it. We beat the City behemoth on our own terms. Let them shudder at the prospect. It's possible. It's still possible.

I would have thought it would be a mixture of experienced players who need a game and youth anyway. Expect to see Neto, Kiwior, Zinchenko, Sterling, Jorginho and Jesus at least in the team. Probably Saliba and Rice too. MLS and Nwaneri almost nailed on for a start. Leaves one position to start and a super strong bench if required.

This 100%. Still unsayable. For all the mocking of Italian football's undoubted corruption at least the authorities several times over 40 or so years have made proper charges and banned players and clubs. But the corruption in England is a different level of sophistication, it goes right to the top. We have a system of government that as long as you "declare" it, you can receive gifts from donors and lobbyists. Oliver was sent on a training jolly to Saudi with City money? Is this true? Is it acceptable because he "declared" it? It defies belief. And yes the kicking the ball rule is silly, it's wildly inconsistent and if a ref can't make his own call for the good of the game then football is being ruined. I'm with Blogs on the thought that they do this for the spectacle but it means those doing it do not understand the beauty of football, that could have been a classic, it was a classic in another way, the irresistible force against the immovable object.

He called both captains over after someone flattened Timber, and Gundogan then tripped Partey as he was breaking away, no booking there... I don't recall a ref responding to a bookable offence by one side by asking over both capts for a chat.... and then not booking the offender....
it was almost as if he didn't want to issue any 'soft' bookings.... well, to a c115ty player anyway...

Did anyone else see Walker, after the Gabriel goal, mouthing "it was my fault" I thought that was hilarious. Citeh seem clueless how to break down a side that defends in depth.

We had the mentality of champions while the champions themselves didn't.

They might as well have placed the Citeh captain's armband on Oliver. That how bad it was.
Speaking of which, I totally fail to see who had the armband for us in the second half.
My head told me it should have been Rice, but I didn’t see anything on his arm.

Outside of fines, why can't Arteta just say "fuck the PGMOL" and drop the mic. How long are the touchline bans?
In Arteta's case, if he were to say that... Lifetime ban.

Calafiori was interviewed after the game and got close to criticising the ref and my nerves are such that I'm waiting for him to be charged and banned for three games. He carried on talking and I was just willing him to stop. These interviewers wind me up as well. As Arteta said, you don't need to hear us say it, you can see it, if you're not lying to yourself, the blatant bias. Genuine neutrals will see that and side with us.

Particularly liked the last few paras of this morning's excellent review of the game. Yes, we do have their measure. Defensively we are as good as I can remember, getting to mythical proportions. Even with the sneaky equaliser past 7 minutes of Oliver time, we held out against one of the best strikeforces in world football. We need a bit more in attack though. But this was heroic indeed.

Onwards...

The seat little man tight pants kicked belongs to City, so it's their problem. The bottle of water was an inanimate neutral object, it did not ask to be in the hustle bustle of a Premier League encounter. It could have been on Brighton beach, quenching the thirst of a happy swimmer, or at London Zoo keeping children hydrated. It had the misfortune to be sent to the footy, and the cruel foreign man treated it with vulgarity and violence. It had to be protected, its rights defended.

What a catharsis it is to read your words today, Blogs. You get the sense this will be a turning point (if it hasn't happened already). A team like this, with all the unity and ability, is sure to press on and win things. By pure bloody will alone!

Poor Rodri .
The irony of him feigning injury seconds earlier for a nothing situation only to go down injured for real in another nothing situation after a tackle from his old friend was fun you can see Partey wondering “really are you doing it again, to me”?

Yeah, and at the same time, I am fully with blogs. A word of warning would be well sufficient in this case and many others.

Great shift from the team yesterday. The double-standard on delaying the restart offences is maddening, I don't understand what's going on with the referees. If they really want to crack down on it then fine, it's been in the laws since forever, but it has to be applied to all sides.
