Man City and Liverpool fans at work both came into my office at the same time today. City fan flicked four fingers at me. Good job he's an American fair-weather supporter and doesn't have a scooby. The Pool fan, a skinhead Liverpudlian who is the size of a truck and does Aikido, offered me a hug. I declined but might take him up if my prolonged feeling of anger doesn't subside.

...and the thinking behind that signing needs to be consigned to the past somewhat. Havertz was bought in an attempt to rectify gaps in two positions... emerged as a decent option in only one. The attempt to instate him as an 8 was badly misguided... never looked remotely like an 8 or even 8.5 positionally.

We could have got more quality for the same price and saved ourselves several months of midfield disharmony. I'm not unhappy that he's here but I'll never truly love the signing.

If you take away Kai’s goals, pressing, passing, runs etc, you take away a big part what made us great - attacking and defending, especially in 2024 when he got going.

It remains to be seen what having a pure finisher and removing Kai does to the team. For us to improve, we need someone who does more than Kai in all areas or adds so much more attacking wise. Isak comes to mind. I watched Osmihen at the African cup of Nations and he works really hard as well.

I even have doubts about Osimhen at this point- he is a specimen but technically levels under Kai. 17 goals for Osimhen this year vs 14 for Kai who was only the #9 for part of the season. I've never watched Gyokeres play but statistically he is a unicorn. Career trajectory somewhat of a red flag. Isak no doubt would walk right in as the starter but imagine him as the wide left forward... oof.

Not sure I agree.. Reason Kai works is he does a lot of other work like Jesus but different. Osimen is a hard worker as well but it the fit .. ..
Sesko is a puppy and definitely not ready to start from what I’ve seen I know Saps swears he is ready and he has definitely seen more of Sesko than I have .. I can see him becoming a Lewandowski type In a year or 2 though.. Gyokeres standard Im not sure about but he is fun as fuck to watch hard worker and a fucking wrecking ball .. but the man to get is the one who oozes Class and has a ceiling as high as anyone in football.. Isak is the one he can challenge the Norwegian.

Havertz has done well, he is way more confident, he's an intelligent finder of space, he can finish with shots or headers. But he lacks the ability of a pure finisher. He could well play off a striker maybe even on the left where Martinelli has been patchy. He's well integrated into the squad now, but an addition in attack, maybe also a purer winger, is vital.

Found this comment on the .news and found it interesting from a neutral's perspective:

Ben Laine

I’m not a PL fan (I support a lower league team) and barely care about the top flight now because of this Man City nonsense. It has ruined the game. Even if Arsenal win the league next year, it will mean that you should have won three in a row, which is historical. We should be going from one historical era, grounded in fairness (Klopp at Liverpool) to another historical era grounded in fairness (Arteta at Arsenal). Instead, fans of those historical teams have to hope that they can be perfect enough to squeeze by Man City in one season like Liverpool managed.

My best friend is a Gooner, and I wish all of you well – you Arsenal fans have been superb the past couple of seasons, and deserve that parade in Islington.
bundas1966 @ 16:59 | May 20, 2024
I understand some of the disappointment after being so close this season but look on the bright side, we ain't the tiny totts and most of us have seen multiple league trophies in our lifetime.
Football as in life is not always about finishing top dog, it is about the journey and the fun along the way.

We have watched some players grow while some have regressed and I feel as though next season will be another step upwards. Whether it brings silverware is neither here nor there for me. Not sure about some of the more sought after members of our squad though, the year after next could see some go if no trophies come their way.

Their wealth and the number of titles already won carries its own momentum. I maintain they were not as good as last season maybe even a couple of seasons before the 100 points. But once we lost to Villa and they went out of the CL and De Bruyne came back they were relentless in a kind of low-hum numbing kind of way. It wasn't that we lost to a good Villa side, it's that against Villa, Utd, Everton we made heavy work of it. The flair of post New Year had gone and the enormity of the possibility of toppling City just led to us faltering. It's all down to the striker, winger and mid we get in. Arteta has to be spot on. No room for error. We can beat them. All or Nothing!

It's depressing that the modern iteration of Manchester City exists but our failure to stop them from winning yet another title doesn't mean they're completely insurmountable from 1st place. You could argue that we have seen (slightly) superior City sides to the 23/24 version... and given the quality differential, which I believe is bigger than some are willing to acknowledge, I'd say a two-point gap is cause for encouragement... we all know we still have a comparatively imperfect squad.

There's no question that it will be very, very, very difficult to arrest the rate at which City win trophies long-term... but the league title can be won if we invest smartly and start plucking fruit from higher branches. We can punch holes in their ship.

Pep also made worse football to watch with his introduction of the cynical soft trip foul on half way line to stop a break , see Ferndinho.
So annoying and make watching city so boring to watch ,whether they playing Madrid. Utd or stoke , or palace . It stops the counter attack to make for such a boring spectacle.
Ferguson, Wenger even Jose teams didn't do this , annoys me it's in premier league these days , the old fashioned quick break by the under dog
myleftwingfoot @ 15:55 | May 20, 2024
I don't know if calling C115h 'The Untouchables' is a deliberate or accidental reference to the film and the criminal organisation on which it is based.

There certainly is an air of criminality around the C115h Group, its ownership and how money has been funnelled around dodgy, non-existent corporations and its 19 other football franchises across the globe.

If only we had a footballing Eliot Ness to bring to justice those footballing cheats that have used the power and wealth of a nation-state to suck the merest element of competition away from a sport that we all enjoy so much.

It's interesting to note that C115h, under its autocratic ownership, has become a mirror of its owners. Hiding behind expensive legal councils, using strong-arm PR enforcers, and eliminating any scintilla of dissent and competition.

Utilising Pep's football nihilism, C115h has become the true heirs of autocratic and robotic football.

What comes to mind is that immortal quote from Robert Oppenheimer, interpreting the Bhagavad Gita, when asked about the monster he had created with the Atomic Bomb, 'I am become Death, destroyer of Worlds.'

This is what Pep, backed by an autocratic nation's immense wealth and power, has done. Destroyed our footballing world.

I think we should aim to have an absolute minimum of 20 outfield players.

I'm (again) surprised how few injuries City's squad has sustained given how ridiculously streamlined it is. However, it helps that virtually every player they have is quality. We don't have that luxury and need to compensate for greater quantitative depth.

As currently constructed, we need 2 players. We're always a few players short. LOL.
1. Big CF (maybe Sesko)
2. DM who can play at CB (anyone will do, a signing from left field- Anton Stach).

The key is Declan Rice. He has the off-ball work down pat. Winning tackles and shit. But his passing is levels below what's needed. Main reason why Partey still playing despite the evidence that his legs are going (gone?). Ode may need to drop in to help in build up.

Raya

White Saliba Gabriel

Rice

Ode Timber

Kai

Saka Sesko Martinelli

It hurts, but proud that after years of decline post 2008 we now have a real side who don't go to the modern day equivalents of Bolton and Stoke and bottle it. Now we need to improve more again because time don't stand still in football.
chrism @ 10:05 | May 20, 2024
I agree. If you look at the age profile of the first team squad, they are very young to be doing what they're doing. And that age profile is going be lowered with Cedric and Elneny and probably Partey leaving.

A couple of judicious additions and we're set fair for another good season.
bundas1966 @ 10:01 | May 20, 2024
Proud of the team and the club. Not going to get into the what ifs and maybes of the season we have improved and with some new additions we will likely improve a bit more.

They are a brilliant team, no doubt. But it was all built with unlimited finding before FFP/PSR really kicked in, exactly as Chelsea were. Both of these clubs were nothing clubs really, City in particular always had great support, but both have spent time out of the top tier in my lifetime (53 years and counting, nearer 54 now because that's how time works) and at best were middle level top division teams, a Spurs or an Everton, if you will. Without those huge injections fo funds, if FFP/PSR were in force then, they'd still likely be nowhere.

We have got to second in the last two season with some injections of money from the owners, within the current spending limits, but mainly from having a laser-focussed manager who knows what it takes to win and is totally ruthless in trying to achieve that aim. It will be interesting to see how Newcastle go, their owners obviously have unlimited finds, but they are subject to spending rules. Eddie Howe doesn't seem the type of cutthroat manager to get them to the top.

While money is important, it's more and more about having the right manager and wider staff in place than that now, Man Utd are the richest club in the country and are a shambles. Guardiola has mentioned the fact that his contract is up at the end of next season, it will be interesting to see what happens then. Although when he does leave, I imagine that the first phone call the City executives make will be to Arteta!

I thought this made a lot of sense

These questions can exist simultaneously with the fact Manchester City are a brilliant, hall-of-famer team and a joy to watch. None of this is anything to do with the players or manager. These are incredible champions. But they have also won the league by two points in a season when teams with far fewer charges were docked eight points and four points for breaking rules on expenditure. How are fans of those teams supposed to feel watching the trophy being hoist?

Those charges have been processed during the current season. If City are found guilty – a big if, as they deny every charge – a genuine regulator with a desire to enforce the rules would have a full range of penalties available. In the middle of which two points look pretty small beer.

Normally at the end of the season I look forward to watching the FA Cup final but with the two finalists I just don’t care about it. If I had to pick a team that I’d like to win it would be City because it would make the result totally irrelevant while a Manure win would just give their scummy supporters something to brag about.
Anyway I’ll be in Italy so I will be able to avoid the hype about the game.

While the 115 charges will cloud their achievements, the way city get the next set of players seamlessly is something to learn from.
Silva, Mahrez, ...
Foden has really stepped up. Rodri is pre-eminent in his position (Rice runs him close). B.Silva pretty consistent and then De Bruyne and Haaland just masterful. They have a lot of consistent 8 players and a manager who's driven. The club's money has allowed that to be built but it's still impressive to me in the way Liverpool in the 70s and 80s and United in the 90s and 2000s were dominant. We are young upstart Davids challenging the Goliath. One title would be exceptional. I think next season is a good shout depending on whether we spend big and spend well. I think Kroenke will back Arteta. But the pressure's on. Havertz came good but he wasn't and isn't the total package. We have to really step up on recruitment. But great to see Timber back, the way he moves, his strength, his crisp passing, the choices he makes. We missed him badly. Next season will be better! Believe!

Silva, Mahrez, Gundogan left the team. And the team just goes on.

Some of their players are good not necessarily great. Akanji, ake, kovacic. But some how they achieve perfection. Or close to it.
At the same time they are a team easily forgotten.
Like who will miss them in the CL final. If Madrid failed to get to the final, there would have been talk.

Its difficult to define. Its frustrating.
One thing is for certain. Two points behind this monster team means we are getting there. We need to believe in ourselves.

It is in the very nature of sporting franchises to crave dominance by any means, and sporting businesses to crave certainty at any cost. And so it is the sacred duty of rule-makers and governing bodies to forestall them in advance, to build the structures that fix the distortions and imbalances before they materialise.

Instead the Premier League turned a blind eye to immeasurable autocrat wealth, cashed the cheques, bathed in the reflected glory, gripped above all by a faith in the intrinsic virtue of its product, a belief that competitive balance would just happen, was simply in its essential nature.
The result – years later – is another Manchester City title that only Manchester City truly care about, and even they occasionally appear to be going through the motions.

The striker role if lead to belive will be isak or his sweedish mate Vikto Gyogeres .
Both tick alot of boxes for us but wonder is Victor the more likely to settle in . Isak does carry alot of injuries too .
Gonzalo Ramos was only on loan at PSG so maybe he's an option but in reality they bought him but loaned him in to balance the books , left of field thought could arteta tidy up Rashfords attitude or is he fecked , probably will go to Tothers or maybe Newcastle

I want too much maybe but to compete with that lot unless or until the 115 charges stick is gonna take that. I'd go Fofana over Zubi for his physical presence and one-on-one skills but I can see why Arteta favours Zubi. Up front a striker for sure and someone who can give Saka a break too and maybe push Martinelli, Trossard and Jesus to be better as though they're all good they're still a way off top levels. Saka and Ødegaard were exceptional, Trossard did a lot too with his finishing. At the back another big CB wouldn't go amiss though Gabi and Will were simply the best this year, Ben White too. Diomande and Hato would be great additions, but I'm dreaming again!

I enjoyed the day. It was sunny, I was back in my old neighbourhood, watched at The Barn surrounded by so many Arsenal shirts of every description, mixed in with the young hipsters going about their day. The excitement was understandable but as everyone got drunker the expectation increased despite the unlikelihood. That phantom 2-2 most didn't believe but it would have been more than a miracle. For all City's oil wealth it was a local boy who sealed it for them.

I don't really care about the accusations even as I understand why many do. I care that I support a very great club which is up there competing with the best and getting better, with the classiest fans in the world and in a community close to my heart. Whatever happens that's not changing.

And this blog which I've been reading daily for 15 years or more gives me most of what I need in terms of support and football banter (and the rest). So thanks to Andrew and the whole team that make this happen, all the hard work (and hard drinking) you put in! And good to catch up over time with people on here. I think when malaisegooner manages to make it over for the final day next year, we'll know it will be to celebrate the quadruple unbeaten season. If that's what it takes to beat City, that's what we'll do.

Beating Villa or Fulham on New Year's Day would not have made it the perfect season but would have been enough to win. It's harsh but there it is.

Can you help ? Have we ever lost with Partey , rice , odegaard midfield on the pitch .?
Not in league ? ( Only one I can think of was Bayern away ? - but one of them subbed off at the time ?)
I think ...
TP made some great forward passes but it was more obvious than ever how his legs have gone, he laboured so hard to get back and make recovery tackles. We need a serious upgrade there, like-for-like (of a younger, fitter Partey) a minimum. That's what it takes to beat the machine. That and a proper centre-forward.

To beat the 115 abudhabi cyborgic co. you basically need to have the perfect season with insane 2 or more winning runs (10-12 consecutive wins).

haha I had to change as I was turned away when I first arrived; covered in blood and goat skins with a machete between my teeth :)

Thanks Andrew to you and the whole Arseblog team/family for all the blogs, pods etc.

In a season where we came so close, only beaten to it by a cheating bohemoth, we'll be back again and hopefully scale the mountain.
